Reverse 9 by Valeriya Borissova (@create.with.vb) is a research project that looks at how social media psychologically conditions its users – and not always for the better. Taking the form of a personalised art installation, the project delves into how algorithms, dopamine-driven loops and more are used to hack our cognitive processes in order to control and manipulate our behaviour. The project looks at 9 different conditions brought about by social media use, and how they all lead to a single psychological outcome: Total Identity Fragmentation. “Platforms shape identity through algorithmic classification, reinforcement systems, emotional triggers, and appearance-based validationPlatforms shape identity through algorithmic classification, reinforcement systems, emotional triggers, and appearance-based validation,” Valeriya says. “As users engage, they adapt and fragment their identities across platforms, gradually losing coherence between their authentic self and the roles they perform. The fragmentation extends across cognition, emotion, and behaviour, destabilising the sense of personal integrity.” To check out Reverse 9 and other student projects here at CCI, why not visit UAL Showcase? It’s where graduating students share their work with the wider world as they take the next step in their creative careers. Artistic representation showing a person's head with the top part transparent, revealing another smaller person inside, sitting behind bars, symbolizing emotional exhaustion.
