Congratulations to Mary Duggan Architects @marydugganarc and Ruff Architects @ruffarchitects for winning the 2026 RIBA @riba Stirling Prize for Architecture, with their project Lion Green Road in Coulsdon!

In 2023, A House for Artists @ahouseforartists won the RIBA Neave Brown Award for Housing and was shortlisted for the Stirling Prize. Seeing a project rooted in place, creativity and community recognised on this stage meant the world to us, and we’re still proud of what it continues to give back to Barking and Dagenham.

A House for Artists is an ambitious model for affordable and sustainable housing tied to long-term public engagement in Barking Town Centre. Commissioned by Create London, the project is funded by the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham and the Mayor of London, and delivered by BeFirst (working on behalf of LBBD). The inaugural public programme was supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and The Rayne Foundation.

Thanks to all who attended our Autumn Garden Party (and 10th anniversary celebration of The White House!). It was a very special day that showed just how important The White House is as a place of connection and creativity. We want to thank General and our incredible kitchen team for delicious catering, Perry for a brilliant lavender bag sewing workshop, @mirotomarkin for curating the painting club exhibition and running the painting workshop, and @yuchenwang__ and @androsemeiko for a fantastic mapping workshop 🍁

You can join Yu-Chen and Andro again at the White House on 7th November for our next Creative Walk ‘never know what we’ll find on the way home’, in which we'll be exploring the local environment through creative observation, collective wandering and sharing. Tickets in bio 🔗

Barking Riverside Wildlife and Wellbeing Trail.

These waymarkers, habitat structures and bench were created using locally sourced salvaged industrial waste, with each piece designed to represent the specific wildlfe species found along the route. Each sculpture features an integrated QR code linking walkers to an immersive soundscape.

The public trail makes for a stunning walk, and the build and install remains one of our director Tom's favourite projects from the workshop archives.

Squaring the Corners on the Becontree Estate in Dagenham.

Commissioned to mark the estate's centenary in 2023, this project transformed neglected corner plots into shared community squares that link local industrial history to a new public space.

We built four custom triangle molds in our South East London workshop where we cast 16 tonnes of pigmented blue concrete. On site, 35 powder coated reclaimed crankshafts - sourced from the historic Ford factory around the corner - were meticulously lined up, leveled and secured into place, anchored entirely by the concrete blocks. We'd love to go back and see what it all looks like now.

You can catch susan pui san lok’s Centenary/Centenaries (2022/26-) in East of the Aldgate Pump, part of the inaugural Backyard Biennial: East at @whitechapelgallery , on show until 6 September 2026 ✨

Centenary/Centenaries (in progress) (2022/26-) is a long poem/script, soundwork, experimental live assemblage, and immersive installation with video, sound, texts and textiles.

Centenary was originally commissioned by Create London for the Becontree Centenary programme, commemorating the opening of the Becontree Estate in the London borough of Dagenham and Barking. An ambitious post-war project designed to provide ‘homes fit for heroes’, Becontree was once the largest public housing project in Europe, and remains the largest council estate in the UK. With around 29,000 houses built between 1921 and 1934, Becontree came to house c.100,000 people, including those displaced by the East End slum clearances – the Chinese in Limehouse (the site of London’s ‘first Chinatown’) among them.

Taking Becontree as a point of entry and departure, Centenary alludes to histories of Chinese migration behind or beyond prevailing narratives. Spanning three centuries of movement triggered by colonial expansion, imperialism and systems of indenture, the work touches on Hong Kong Chinese in post-war Britain, the 1997 handover, as well as the artist’s experience growing up in a council house on the Essex–London border.

Centenary was first recorded and premiered on ResonanceFM as a broadcast and live stream (2022), coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the Hong Kong handover. It was subsequently presented as sound installation at esea contemporary (2023), and performed as an experimental live assemblage for Asymmetry Foundation (2025). For Whitechapel Gallery’s 125th anniversary programme, Centenary/Centenaries (in progress) has been significantly expanded with original music, Chinese translation, and images from The London Archives (2026).
