Barking Riverside Wildlife and Wellbeing Trail.

These waymarkers, habitat structures and bench were created using locally sourced salvaged industrial waste, with each piece designed to represent the specific wildlfe species found along the route. Each sculpture features an integrated QR code linking walkers to an immersive soundscape.

The public trail makes for a stunning walk, and the build and install remains one of our director Tom's favourite projects from the workshop archives.

Squaring the Corners on the Becontree Estate in Dagenham.

Commissioned to mark the estate's centenary in 2023, this project transformed neglected corner plots into shared community squares that link local industrial history to a new public space.

We built four custom triangle molds in our South East London workshop where we cast 16 tonnes of pigmented blue concrete. On site, 35 powder coated reclaimed crankshafts - sourced from the historic Ford factory around the corner - were meticulously lined up, leveled and secured into place, anchored entirely by the concrete blocks. We'd love to go back and see what it all looks like now.

Summer Activities for the White House Community

Nadia Abatorab-Manikowska and Bethany Sewell delivered bespoke cyanotype workshops responding to the local flora and fauna in Dagenham, London. We looked at photographic processes in our closest environments, discussing both garden and pond life.

Great appreciation to Create's curator, Michaela Freeman, and incredible volunteer, Suz, for their help on both workshop days.

I’ve made a little snippet of my 2014 animation made in the Olympic Park for the modern attention span!

Looking back on it now, the themes are still so relevant. Hackney Wick has been transformed since I made this, and many of the artists and creative people who helped shape the area have since lost- or are at risk of losing - their homes and studios.

At the time I was documenting a place in the middle of rapid change. The work was on a temporary hoarding, but in a strange way it has become a record of what was there before so much was developed.

It was a huge project. Alongside the animation I created a 300 meter long mural and also an installation behind the hoarding- who remembers those cut out windows and the houses behind them?

Thank you to @monikerprojects @createlondon and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park Legacy Commission

This week, we’re exploring the relationship between play and architecture through a selection of our projects, past, present and future. Looking at how spaces can encourage creativity, interaction and a sense of community!

Starting with a throwback to Higham Hill Theatre, part of Waltham Forest’s Making Places initiative. vPPR transformed a forgotten corner of Higham Hill Park into a flexible community amphitheatre, creating new connections between the theatre, café, playground and surrounding park.

Simple linear benches frame a low circular stage, allowing the space to shift between formal performances, informal gatherings and everyday play. What was once a leftover space has become a place for creativity, connection and community.

A reminder that play doesn’t always need to be prescribed, sometimes architecture simply needs to make space for it!

Back for round two of the Architecture Incubator at the AA. While the first session tackled how practices get off the ground, this one got straight to the point: where does the work actually come from?

We heard from eight guests, ranging from clients sitting on the other side of the table to established and emerging founders. They broke down what they look for in a pitch, how to spot opportunities, and what it actually takes to get your first real breakthrough.

Gabriel Chipperfield (@wendoverstudio) Easily the most direct voice of the series. His playbook came down to a simple choice: either you have funds and put out an open call, or you go find money for your own idea. He spoke about using early work with banks, hospitality, and retail to build cultural equity, reminding us that the value you bring beyond pure design is what actually closes the deal.

Eszter Steierhoffer (Director, @thecosmichouse) Eszter views commissioning as a continuous dialogue. Charles Jencks’ house was originally a collaborative effort between Terry Farrell, Michael Graves, and Piers Gough. Rather than keeping it frozen in time, she constantly commissions new artists and architects to react to it. For her, one commission is just the springboard for the next.

Will Gowland (@builtworks__) After landing a room in the 2020 Venice Biennale, Will didn’t wait for the phone to ring. He launched @architects.holiday, building cabins on his family farm using local timber and hemp insulation. He was upfront about the financial reality (cash flow meant scaling back from five cabins to three), but his main point was: if you build it yourself, you stop relying on someone else to hand you an opportunity.

Marie Bak Mortensen (@createlondon) Marie bridges the gap between local authorities with land and young practices looking for a break, which is especially tough when Arts Council success rates sit around 12%. She shared a great example: the Brewster Playground, a £15k build made in a month from demolished structures, ended up touring for 11 years. Proof

🍎 We’d love to see more fruit trees planted across urban neighbourhoods! There’s something super exciting about growing and harvesting your own apples.

The children we taught during half-times at our residency at @whitehousedagenham with @createlondon enjoyed picking their apples for our apple crumble baking session.

Harvest Tip: Look out for holes as that’s a sign that there may be a wiggly worm inside. Always cut the apple in half before consuming – you could compost the core and eat the rest after a good rinse 🤭

Growing, cooking and dining sustainably! 🥒🫙🍽️

Next month The Barefoot Planter turns 3! It’s been an absolute joy and pleasure to support so many people in their food growing journey in London. We love that we get to foster and nurture intergenerational connections through learning, play and exploration.

We initially only set out to offer gardening workshops but soon realised that we wanted to connect people with the food on a deeper level. Encouraging them to join us in a journey of garden-to-fork and a celebration of seasonal ingredients.

Our ‘Pickles & Preserve Parties’ act as a window into the importance of food preservation to reduce food waste. During our residency at @whitehousedagenham with @createlondon we utilised the compost bin for fallen fruit to enrich the garden in future years.
