I feel a little helpless here in Houston. Big Bend is a full days drive across the state from me, but it is a refuge. And not only my personal refuge for peace, quiet, a rest and reset in nature but it also provides something that no medical prescription could ever cure, no therapy session could ever solve.

I know I'm not alone. There's many other Texans that feel that same way. And the love for this region extends beyond our State borders and even the United States border bringing visitors from all over the globe to experience the beauty in this park.

I had one of the most powerful, peaceful mornings of my life with my son in Big Bend. We started the morning off having breakfast at sunrise with Mule Ears in view and then spent the morning at Santa Elena Canyon hiking and taking in the most breathtaking views, beautiful birdsong and chatting with many other families along the trail.

The park is so remote, that even with the influx of visitors it still seems very wide open and as if you have the park to yourself many times. One of the moments that stood out to me most was standing on Mariscal Mine and hearing absolutely nothing, yet everything all at once - my heart beating in my chest, my lungs inhaling and exhaling the crisp air, the vastness of the desert that allows everything to slow to a halt and let you experience nature in its most rugged form is intensely quiet enough for you to sit with your own thoughts. No cell service no distractions, just the land the way the good Lord intended it to be.

I say all that to say this - it's not JUST another park. It's much more than that and deserves the conservation and preservation from us, it's people.

Call your government officials, sign the petition at @nobigbendwall and help keep our precious park safe. Save Big Bend.

One of my favorite items in my closet is a classic pencil skirt. It always makes me look polished and like I have my life together - even if behind the scenes is actual chaos.
