🌍 The frequency of our updates has been a bit lower as of late, mainly because we are working on a lot of cool plans for upcoming residencies behind the scenes. We’ve got great ideas on how to take Creative Embassies a step further, and become even more of an international network of Creative Ambassadors.

⚡ We can’t wait to share the plans with you once there solidified. But in the meantime we still have these crazily cool artworks and some words to share from our last residency, by @duggiedundas from Salford!

🎨 “Being dropped into an unknown town in a different country was a daunting thought at first. However after just one day, I felt welcomed by a community of cool and interesting creatives. By the end of the residency a group of four very contrasting characters had come together and engineered a clay based experience session for the public! It pushed me out of my comfort zone and I loved every moment of it and made some new friends on the way.”

"When the airplanes are flying over, I'll hang my body over your crib" -anonymous person, the Embodied Archive

💬 During the Leeuwarden residency there was also a local artist participating from, of course, Leeuwarden. This was Anne Brouwer. Anne is a social designer, who likes to work with people in the public space. She intervenes, connects and starts conversations in this place she considers our ‘collective living room’. Read below how she employed this mindset within the context of this residency!

🎤 "The archive of embodied stories is an audio-based collection of stories that I found on the streets of Leeuwarden during my residency. In the archive you will find a collection of stories that are being carried around in bodies for years, decades or even centuries. Stories that may not have had words yet. Gently I dug these stories out of the mud of time and space and arranged them in an anonymous open archive in order to exchange and inspire new conversations."

"I love exploring cultures and making international creative friends!" -Jamie-Lee

🌍 For the Leeuwarden residency, not one, but two artists came from Salford, UK. Jamie-Lee and Duggie are a creative duo that work together frequently. Below Jamie-Lee shares her perspective of what it was like to work together this time, collaborating also with new people in an international team, in a different country!

🪀 “It has been really fun to spend time with my creative partner Duggie in a new environment. We are like chalk and cheese with our method of work; this residency has been a great experience to see how and why we work so well together.

⛵ During the residency, we played with clay that we sourced ourselves. It was exciting to transform a 3D material into a medium to create 2D paintings with. Which expanded to painting windows with clay! I enjoy inviting people to be playful and creative while learning.

✈️ I'm excited to see my wonderful international friends again and explore their cultures and for them to experience the Salford life here in the UK.”

“What we achieved together in such a short space actually blew my mind. Imagine what we can do now?!” -John

📸 First of all, happy new year everyone! For this year, we’ve got a lot of cool new plans, including, of course, new residencies. But we are still in the afterglow of the wonderful three residencies of last year, and have more to share of them with you. And so has John O’Neill, theatre maker, actor, director and writer from Salford, UK. Check out his words about his residency in Rijeka below:

🎤 "I had such a wonderful and insightful experience on my residency in Rijeka. Being able to collaborate with artists from across Europe, all with different skills and talents was exciting. Blending our abilities together to create something that explores a feeling we all feel no matter who we are or where we are from. Watching RNDM & Céline work was really interesting, seeing them put their artistry into play whilst balancing and collaborating was amazing.

🎧 What we achieved together in such a short space actually blew my mind. Imagine what we can do now?! The Creative Embassies is a wonderful project - giving artists a place to play, to learn, explore and collaborate on an international level. I’m so grateful I was able to play a role this year and cannot wait to see it grow and flourish throughout Europe and beyond!”

“Creative Embassies is a special and different residential experience that creates a platform for collaborations, meetings and exchange of ideas.”

✏️ @katarinakozhul was the creative ambassador from Rijeka, Croatia during the Leeuwarden Residency. She is a visual artist and curator, using art to reflect on social situations. Katarinaand the other participants creating a playful and informal setting to engage in an alternative way into conversations with the people of Leeuwarden, using clay from the local environment. Check out below what she had to say about this recidency! Oh, and check out her sketches in the slides too.

🌐 “This residency connected me with artists from two countries, from whom I had the opportunity to hear different experiences and opinions. This is a project that does not expect perfect dedication and a final product from the participants, but a project that connects people and cities and that is what sets it apart from other residences. I feel like I learned a lot from others in just a few days.

I think it is important to get to know local scenes from different cities in order to apply such experiences in our own artistic practice. Leeuwarden is a beautiful city and I can't wait to see what the continuation of this project will bring!”

☀️ RIJEKA RESIDENCY 🌊

“This residency made me explore my abilities and expand the boundaries.” -Céline

📸 We still have more material to share with you of the residency hosted by @urbanisepare in Rijeka, Croatia, last October. Here are the analogue pictures made by the Dutch ambassador @foreverparadiso during the exploration of the city and the creation of the exhibition, as well as a few words by Céline herself:

💬 "The thing I love about residencies in particular is the fact that I somehow all of a sudden feel like a resident of the city, which gives me the feeling of coming home. We presented our work on Saturday, meaning we actually created it on site for only 48 hours. I enjoy doing these kind of projects, with a short time span and in this case quite a big result. It gives me a chance to step out of my comfort zone and not to overthink; as there's no time for overthinking.

During this residency I designed an exhibition, the starting point of the exhibition and the exhibited pieces were interviews I had with the guys from RNDM collective and with John. We talked about vulnerability (a theme which I'm exploring for my new piece premiering on the 9th of December). The conversations led to words, phrases and quotes I translated into posters which then were RISO printed by Anna. Whom is a local with a RISO studio.

This residency made me explore my abilities and expand the boundaries. Gave me a chance to meet new people and be inspired by their creativity. It made me realize that Rijeka and Leeuwarden are also very much alike when it comes to the cultural scene, even though there's a lot more underground stuff going on there."

🎨 LEEUWARDEN RESIDENCY 🎧
Exhibition photos

✈️ On Sunday the 27th of November the exhibition called ‘Mooching’ took place in the @neushoorncafelwd in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands. This exhibition resulted from the Leeuwarden residency, in which the artists Katerina from Rijeka, Croatia, Duggie and Jamie-Lee from Salford, UK, and Anne from the city of Leeuwarden itself collaborated on an art project during one week.

🌊 Throughout the residency they got to know each other and explored the city, and through this process the international group of creatives came up with the idea to invite the people of Leeuwarden to come to this exhibition and meet them. Though not through ordinary conversations, but by creating artworks together, either with sounds and voices, or with clay taken from the local Wadden Sea area.

🪁 This resulted in a fun, creative and playful afternoon full of interesting and meaningful encounters. See it for yourself on the pictures above.

⛵ LEEUWARDEN RESIDENCY 🌤️
Update

🎨 Last week, the final Creative Embassies residency of 2022 happened in Leeuwarden. It was another wonderful process, with the artists getting to know each other, exploring the city and researching artistic ideas, that resulted in a fun and playful exhibition. Using clay from the Frisian Wadden area (a unique local biome) the group presented a space in the @neushoorncafelwd in which the public could engage in conversation through playful activities and audio recordings.

🌐 While all the artists have returned home by now, new connections have been made. Step by step the goal of Creative Embassies is becoming reality, as we hear about new friendships, collaborations and interests that spring from these residencies. Soon we will share some pictures of the exhibition, as well as the experiences of the participating artists. The pictures above have been made during the group’s artistic research by the Wadden Sea.

Exhibition

🌐 The artists of the current Creative Embassies residency in Leeuwarden have organized an exhibition at the @neushoorncafelwd tomorrow, from 12:00 until 17:00! This week @duggiedundas and @wainman_design from Salford, UK, @katarinakozhul from Rijeka, Croatia, and @anne__brouwer from the Dutch city Leeuwarden itself, all met each other. Together they explored the city, the local art scene and even the Frisian Wadden Sea area.

💬 Now they want to meet the inhabitants of Leeuwarden. You are invited to come to the exhibition and create an artwork with these international artists, using sounds, voices and earth taken from the Wadden area. This way they intent to transform conversations and encounters into a visual, artistic experience.

🎨 So swing by, have a drink, meet the artists, and become a co-creator yourself!

🌊 LEEUWARDEN RESIDENCY 🌐
Introducing the participants

The third and final residency of 2022 starts today, in the city of Leeuwarden, the Netherlands. All the participants departed today from their home cities across Europe, to get a taste of the art scene of Leeuwarden, and collaborate with each other to create something new. But first, let’s introduce this residency’s creative ambassadors:

🎮 First we have Duggie and Jamie-Lee. @duggiedundas is a designer and new media artist who digitally creates electronic machines and devices, usually to encouraging to make his audience rediscover the joy of playing and exploring. @wainman_design is a creator, facilitator, and educator, aiming to make learning experiences more inclusive for different minds, using playful and creative thinking as a vehicle. With the planet-friendly tool of 3D printing, she creates accessible experiences for public engagement. This playful pair represents the Salford embassy this residency.

🖼️ All the way from Rijeka there’s Katarina. She’s a young visual artist and curator. Her artistic practice is often a reaction to social situations, based on work in the local community and activism, using sculpture, performance, video and installation. As a graduate student of the Academy of Applied Arts, @katarinakozhul already did tons of interesting projects on an international level, and currently works as a curator at the SKC Gallery in Rijeka. Oh, and she also works with children.

📺 As the Dutch creative ambassador from the city of Leeuwarden itself we have Anne, who works as a social designer and artist. Her works often take place in the public space. @anne__brouwer approaches the public space as our collective living room where we meet, share and connect with other people, artists and communities. In these places she creates interventions, activities and conversations to work towards a connected future. A future we’d also love to see!

This week they’ll get to know each other, the city of Leeuwarden and its art scene, and create something unique along the way! Stay tuned for more info!

🥔 This Friday evening, on the 25th of November, is the Creative Embassies Community Dinner! This week the Leeuwarden residency will be taking place. For this residency, artists and representatives of the Creative Embassies of each connected city will be here in Leeuwarden, and they will all attend this dinner. It's going to be great.

🌊 During the Rijeka residency in Croatia last October the guys from @rndm.concept worked together with @jk0_91 from England and @foreverparadiso from the Netherlands. In just a few days time they set up a wonderful interdisciplinary exhibition about the theme of 'vulnerability', consisting of multiple rooms, various artforms and interaction with visitors. Below are a few words about the residency from RNDM's perspective:

🌍 "This experience was of great benefit to us. We connected with artists from other countries and joint works are already being agreed upon for the future. We met great people and had a lot of fun, but also showed how in just a few days of working together we can set up an exhibition. Imagine what we can do in a week of joint work? We believe that Creative Embassies is on the right track for networking people all over Europe and that the project can only grow from here."
