Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing
and rightdoing there is a field.
I'll meet you there.

When the soul lies down in that grass
the world is too full to talk about.

“One of the great problems with the Palestinian experience is that there isn’t a sense in which the justice has been acknowledged.”
Edward Said addresses what it means to acknowledging both sides.

In this excerpt from the roundtable “Palestine: Settler Colonialism and the Ruse of Independence” Jeremy Scahill reflects on Palestinian survival against the violence of settler colonialism.

He points to a collective commitment to life, dignity, and endurance that cannot be destroyed by bombs, drones, or military technology.

🔮 Archival footage from 2022 of MEP Mick Wallace delivered a speech at EU parliament meeting

“When Israel terrorised the Palestinian people every day, is that terrorism?”

MEP Mick Wallace spoke at an EU parliament meeting on recognising Russia as a “state sponsor of t***orism”, asking whether the same would apply to western nations, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

Every journalist who covered the Middle East for long enough eventually got the question. Robert Fisk got it more than most.

“Do you believe Israel has the right to exist?” It sounds like a straightforward yes or no. It isn’t. It’s a filter — answer yes and you validate the framing; answer no and you’re an antisemite. Fisk refused the binary.

His response — show me where the border is — cut to the actual unresolved issue. Israel is one of the few states in the world that has never formally declared its own borders. The 1948 armistice lines, the pre-1967 borders, the post-1967 occupation lines, the wall — none of these are the same thing, and Israel has never ratified any of them as final.

The Versailles reference isn’t obscure. The Zionist delegation in 1919 presented a map in which “Palestine” extended north to the Litani River in what is now Lebanon. That map was rejected, but it showed how far back the disagreement over territory actually goes.

Fisk covered the Middle East for The Independent from 1976 until his death in October 2020. He was one of the few Western journalists to interview Osama bin Laden — three times. He was fiercely critical of Israeli policy and equally critical of Arab regimes. He won more British press awards than any other foreign correspondent.

This clip is from a 2010 speech: Lies, Misreporting and Catastrophe in the Middle East.

In a 2002 interview with Democracy Now!, Shulamit Aloni, a former Minister of Education and member of the Isr*eli parliament, was asked why critics of Isr*eli policy in the US are often labelled as antis*mitic

Her response was blunt: “Well, it’s a trick. We always use it”. She explained that whenever someone from Europe criticises Israel, they “bring up the Holocaust,” and whenever someone in the US does the same, they are branded “antis*mitic”.

According to Aloni, this tactic serves a specific dual purpose: firstly, it leverages the historical trauma of the Jewish people and the H*locaust to discredit and silence anyone questioning the Isr*eli government.

Secondly, she noted, this manufactured label is used to “justify everything we do to the P*lestinians,” effectively shielding Isr*el from moral or legal accountability.

Coming from a former cabinet minister, Aloni’s words remain a devastating critique of how accusations of antis*mitism are weaponised to suppress legitimate criticism of Isr*el and enable its g*nocidal policies.

@conflictechoes “Liberation movements fight against imperialism, not with it.”

Kwame Ture (1941–1998), born Stokely Carmichael in Trinidad, was a civil rights organiser and pan-African revolutionary. He served as chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and later as Honorary Prime Minister of the Black Panther Party, before relocating to Guinea in 1969, where he worked under President Sékou Touré and adopted his name. He was a founding member of the All-African People’s Revolutionary Party, through which he spent the final decades of his life advocating for pan-Africanism and socialism.

In this clip, taken from a lecture delivered at the University of Minnesota in 1990, Ture frames the rise of Zionism within Lenin’s ‘Imperialism: The Highest Stage of Capitalism’, arguing that by the turn of the twentieth century, the world had already been divided among colonial powers, leaving no territory to be claimed without aligning with an existing imperial force. Herzl, he contends, did precisely this by attaching himself to British imperialism, the legal product of which was the Balfour Declaration of 1917, a promise made over land Britain was colonising. On those grounds, Ture argues that Zionism cannot be considered a liberation movement, since liberation movements fight against imperialism rather than with it. He identifies American financial support for Israel as the contemporary expression of that alliance.
