Little eyes are always watching, learning, and growing. It's a quote I heard somewhere about parenting. This was a great example of it.

I started embroidering to find a creative outlet for myself. To get off of my devices. My daughters saw me embroidering and they both got curious. Rachel wanted to try embroidering on my moth project. I wondered if she could do it, so I let her. And wow, she could!!!

I got her, her own hoop and got some scrap fabric. I asked what she wanted to embroider and she said a unicorn (because of course!). I found a unicorn line drawing through Google and traced it on the fabric.

She rummaged through my embroidery floss stash and off she went. She made herself a comfy corner and I found her embroidering while she was waiting for the school bus.

Sarah then wanted to join in. Naturally I didn't want a 3 yr old handling a sharp needle. Then I saw on a FB embroidery group, a grandma gave her grandchild a hoop, floss and a needle and the child made random stitches on the fabric. It sparked an idea in my mind. So I gave Sarah a 3" hoop and scrap fabric. She asked me to draw a heart for her to embroider, and I did.

She absolutely shocked me with her sewing because she knew what to do just by observing Rachel and me. She figured out the hand motions and flipping the hoop over to see where to poke the needle next.

Your kids are always obsessed and imitating you.

Let me introduce myself, I'm Ammu Cherian. Wife, mom of 2 girls, textile designer and experimenter of crafts. I have the 'i don't think it will be that hard, I'll figure it out ' gene.

When I moved to the USA in 2016 with my husband, I started my business Amu Cherian as a fashion clothing line. I then pivoted to a home decor brand where I block printed and dyed fabric into beautiful throw pillows and table ware. Eventually I started working directly with artisans in India to create unique hand printed and hand woven fabrics that I used to make throw pillows and table linens.

I have been featured in Pop Sugar, Buzzfeed, Magnolia network, several newspapers and magazines. I have done pop up events with Williams Sonoma, Nordstrom and West Elm.

I took a step back from my business end of 2025 to focus on my health. The creative itch always remained, so I took up doing projects I had collected over time. I began to embroider patterns and designs.

A few months in, I felt like documenting this journey. It's my time to be creative to create. To embrace the imperfections, to experiment, to be encouraging and show grace to myself. To be fun and whimsical, full of color and quirks.

There is no big plan, just whimsy and good vibes to go along :)

Gosh the pick up car line at school takes a good 45 mins of my day, so why not make it whimsical instead of mundane ✨

Hand embroidery is a skill my mom taught me when I was probably 8/9 years old. We crossed stitched a table cover together. Over the years I've honed this skill, learned several stitches. I have phases of sewing and then not sewing for years after.

This year I took back up, and I switch between slow meditative sewing and rage sewing, ha! (Stick around to hear more stories of rage sewing 🙃)

I'm pleasantly surprised that since I started hand embroidery this year in Jan, I've done several projects and stuck with it :)

My first project for 2026. A paint by number kit I got from @homegoods. Simple enough.

I've been exploring how to be creative just for fun and not being commercial. Trying to find my voice and my style. What brings me joy, maybe a bit whimsical.

I came across a Tiktok video while painting this image. The artist after completing her paint by number painting, she would paint a little something extra. A fun phrase, cute doodles or add an extra flair to the painting. 'This is incredible!', I thought.

I felt I got permission to add my own flair to my painting, so I added a few brushstrokes of shading to the flowers. Nothing major aesthetically, but it felt like a first step to step out and be uncoventional 😊
