Beauty in strange places.

See Grot o Rama by @bertietaylor as part of @photofringe at the Marine Workshops 👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼

Photo fringe festival begins on Friday until the end of October. I’m exhibiting some work at the Newhaven marine workshops.
Here’s some info on the exhibition!

Grot o Rama : The beauty in urban decay.

This exhibition seeks to find beauty in everyday scenes which we may often overlook or initially deem unpleasant to the eye. Having grown tired of visiting the usual popular spots and tourist locations, Bertie began exploring off the beaten track to find intrigue and an aesthetic in the unlikeliest places. His series began and was inspired here in Newhaven. He then travelled further afield across Europe in his grandfather’s Toyota Yaris to photograph Grot and urban scenes all over the continent seeking to unlock the mysteries hidden in the mundane everywhere!

Responding to the venue setting and the 2026 Photo Fringe theme, Feedback Loop, ten exceptional lens-based projects gather, seeing Newhaven in different ways.

Lucy Farrant’s exhibition FRAGMENT PIECES explores themes of decay, fragility, femininity, sensuality and opulence 🖤

Large scale textile works and constructions hang alongside drawings and prints, filling the cavernous space of the Atrium with an encyclopedic study of surface and texture.

@photofringe OPEN26 Young Photographers — FREE OPEN CALL

‼️Deadline Extended: 11:59pm 29 September 2026

@photofringe are inviting 11 - 18 year olds from Sussex to submit their photographic images to our OPEN26 Young Photographers open call.

They’re looking for single images that relate to this year’s Photo Fringe theme ‘Feedback Loop’.

Images will be chosen, printed for free and exhibited alongside 10 other artists at the BN9 Marine Workshops in Newhaven. It’s free to submit up to 3 images and is a great opportunity for young people to present their work professionally in a group exhibition. Please encourage any young people you know to submit their work!

Young people are welcome to interpret the theme “Feedback Loop’ in any way they like! We can’t wait to see them :)

What an amazing @artwavefestival we’ve had at the Marine Workshops this September!

With four exhibitions, hundreds of participating artists, and thousands of visitors over the month, we’d like to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who was a part of it.

We are particularly proud to have spotlighted so many young artists in the exhibitions ~ from A Community of Kindness by @lookagainnewhaven , a fantastically curated group show @fromthegroundstudio , and the Emerging Sussex young artists open call from @hospitable_environment

Two of those exhibitions were brought to life by a team of young curators, workshop leaders and invigilators, with special thanks to @maddielockfilm , @egcartwork and the team at @fromthegroundstudio for their curatorial and production work.

We’d like to thank the brilliant art department at @seahaven.academy and the creative courses at @eastsussexcollege , as well as other schools & colleges across Sussex, for all that they do in supporting an upcoming generation into creative futures. It was great to welcome so many of them to the building, and we are excited that East Sussex College are offering creative degrees (currently in Design & Animation) here in their Marine Workshops campus. What an inspiring space for an art college!

Newhaven has always been a rich and inspiring place for artists, and is home to an ever growing community of hugely talented individuals and innovative organisations. With continued investment from @eznewhaven in both programing and exhibition & event spaces, a creative programme overseen by @townergallery , and support from @lewesdistrictcouncil , the town continues to evolve as a thriving cultural destination.

Come and discover it for yourself. There is a packed programme of exhibitions and events over the Autumn here at the Marine Workshops, and throughout the town, and more exciting plans for 2027.

Have you entered yet? You could see your images of Newhaven exhibited at an @newhaventc led exhibition at the Marine Workshops this autumn.

There’s still time to enter the Newhaven Photographic Competition.

The theme this year is ‘Best of Newhaven’. Entries are closing on 15th October. All you need to enter is a mobile phone!

You do not have to live in Newhaven to enter (the photo you take however, must be of Newhaven and Portrait Orientation).

Why not give it a go? Winners receive a £100 voucher!
