Oh, that scratching and sobbing under the floorboards? It’s the first round of fall events!

We’ve got an incredible lineup of fall books (starting tomorrow, with THE PATRON SAINT OF WHITE MENAGERIES and BONOBO), and an equally delicious schedule. Creature’s crawling all over New York, around California, through the DMV area, across Michigan and Pennsylvania, to New Orleans — and we’ve got more in the works than what’s here, so prepare your beady little eyes for updates on BRUJA’S NEST, markets, and more.

Not in any of these places? We’ve got virtual appearances planned with some old and new friends, and you can always summon us to your local bookstore, library, or midnight ritual with a DM or email. We’ll be under your floor before you know it. by @creaturepublishing

We’re delighted to share Bruja’s Nest with readers everywhere!

A telenovela-fueled fever dream of a novel, Brenda’s assured debut takes on monstrousness, motherhood, and class-war horror as Yolanda seeks out a bruja’s ritual with a rooster’s heart in order to escape her circumstances.

Dark, violent, wild, and disturbing, Bruja’s Nest brings to the fore an unlikeable female character—an antiheroine if you will—and by turns sprinkles and dumps in the full range of telenovela life under the watchful eye of Santa Muerte. Be warned it includes abuse and body horror, self-delusions and women’s wrongs, and a mother’s incalculable love.

This is @brendalatorrewrites first book, and it’s a knockout.

We celebrated a little early last week at The Twisted Spine with Gerardo Sámona Córdova and Tiffany Gonzales and again last night at Q.E.D., with more events to come!

Me?! You can call me any name you like… Shame is a quality absent in a witch.

Last night at QED, before we played the Dirty name game, (a survey designed to help you establish your witch’s name), I asked the room: “Who here has already been called a Dirty name?”
“Bitch? Slut?” I raised my hand.
“Cunt?” My hand was still up. And predictably, most every woman in the room had her hand up too.

“How about NASTY?” I asked. The last one is, of course, a reference to America’s 2016 news cycle and a word used in an attempt to disarm a female opponent of power.

In the world of Necrology and Woodfeast, a Dirty name is a reclamation of power. Names that Freemen might spit or wrinkle their noses at are in fact the Dirt’s true identities—these names are received with HONOR and are a radical measure taken against patriarchal conditioning.

Your feral nature is your most magical selves, my dears.

Let them call you whatever they want. I mean it.
Shame is a quality absent in a witch.

Thanks to @brendalatorrewrites, @rjacksonjoseph and @gwendolynkiste for being so badass and Emily at @astoriabookshop for being the best and kindest Log Lady 🔥 by @creaturepublishing

It’s a pleasure every time we work with @pickyourpotions on a book, and this one is no exception — we’re very pleased to wish a happy pub day to Lindsay’s latest, WITCHES OF THE WHEEL!

Publishers Weekly calls WITCHES “a richly imagined and beguiling tale of queer desire, magic, and belonging” while Jessica McHugh notes Lindsay’s “cool, messy, raucous, and harrowing characters aching to entangle you in their mythology...and limbs...and tongues.”

USA Today’s bestselling Lindsay Merbaum will be celebrating the launch @literatibookstore in Ann Arbor this evening. In the words of our own EV Knight: “Grab a cocktail, find a cozy, candle-lit alcove, and let the witches and goddesses take the Wheel.”

WITCHES OF THE WHEEL is available now everywhere books are sold! by @creaturepublishing

@gwendolynkiste has written an incredible, hypnotic, ectoplasm filled extension of The Great Gatsby that is completely her own and completely wonderful.

We are so excited to present the first part of our special series on These Gilded, Ghostly Hearts and the incredible event built to celebrate this special book and author.

First up, we are talking to Gwendolyn about the book itself. How a pink suit started it all, and how we can reclaim stories and narratives to examine issues in a very interesting way. This is such a wonderful conversation and book.

Check out @thehauntedwhimsy for more information about The Green Light Summoning on October 10th, and we hope to see you there! by @creaturepublishing

Happy pub day to IN THESE GILDED, GHOSTLY HEARTS, Gwendolyn Kiste’s haunted house sequel to The Great Gatsby! @gwendolynkiste will be celebrating her launch tonight at Riverstone Books, where she’ll be in conversation with @KitFrick.

GILDED is the book Johanna van Veen calls “the sapphic sequel to The Great Gatsby we have all been waiting for as fervently as Gatsby waited for Daisy” and that Booklist describes as “For fans of Helen Oyeyemi and the decadent, glamorous horror of Donyae Coles.”

Or simply: “A pitch perfect ghost story.” —@vlatinalondon

So excited to announce THOSE WE FEED!

@thischerokeerose, contributor of the opening story for Back For Blood: NEVER WHISTLE AT NIGHT PART II, has written a powerful collection of Indigenous horror stories, each shaped by Aniyunwiya (“Cherokee”) worldviews and the afterlives of historical violence—sometimes visceral, sometimes surreal, but always in defiance of erasure. This collection is tribally specific by design, engaging exclusively with Cherokee histories, cosmologies, and land-based memory—these stories reimagine horror through a specifically Cherokee lens with elements of psychological terror and body horror all simmering together with deep feminist and anti-colonial rage.

We’re thrilled to work with Jessica and to publish this alongside @mcclellandstewart in Canada. Thank you to @rachelletofsky for bringing this one to our attention! by @creaturepublishing

Happy pub day to our first two fall books!!

First up, THE PATRON SAINT OF WHITE MENAGERIES, @laurentdavila’s kaleidoscope of dark LA magic. Lauren’s debut collection, full of “intimate authenticity and fearless curiosity,” (thank you, @mother.horror!) has picked up glowing reviews from Foreword, Independent Book Review, and all kinds of early readers. As Reactor said, “If this is Davila’s debut, I cannot wait to see where she goes from here.” Lauren’s launch party is tonight at the magnificent @goodgirlbooksla, where she’ll be speaking with @themackenzilee. Don’t miss the chance to hang out with these two sharp, delightful writers!

Next, we’re celebrating World Primate Day with You-jeong Jeong’s BONOBO, a beautifully dark example of environmentalist magical realism. Earning a starred review from Publishers Weekly and praise from the Chicago Review of Books (“refreshingly daring in its strangeness”), it’s truly special: as @spinelessbookreviews says, “a tender exploration into the unanswerable questions of life and consciousness itself.” Featuring nimble translation by An Seon Jae, it’ll challenge your thinking about your place in the world — and your soul’s place in your body. by @creaturepublishing
