Mine: An Anthology of Body Autonomy Horror
Edited by Roxie Voorhees and Nico Bell

Back Cover:
Bodily transformation. Possession of the body. Forced disembodiment. A baby consumes its mother in utero. Unrealistic postpartum expectations turn deadly. A witch avenges the voiceless. These 16 original horror stories explore the ownership and control—or lack thereof—that we have over our bodies.

&
Woodfeast (the Dirty, #2)
by Meg Ripley

Necrology Back Cover:
It’s amazing what the spirit can cope with to preserve the body. My spirit is a mighty oak that just won’t fall.

In a fantastical aftermath of the Salem witch trials, magical women known as the Dirty have signed a contract swearing off their innate magic in exchange for freedom from violence by non-magical Freemen. Two hundred years later, in a Catskills orphanage, headmistress Whitetail has sprouted antlers—proof of a violated contract. When her wealthy benefactor visits, proposing marriage, her appearance sparks abuse. Rushing to her teacher’s defense, eight-year-old Rabbit curses the Beard dead, and Whitetail’s arrested on trumped-up charges.

As Whitetail awaits her trial and execution, Rabbit is groomed as the Freemen’s star witness and learns of the terrifying reality to which they aspire. With her magic at stake and a loose tooth in her mouth, Rabbit has little left to lose. And a revolution to gain.

INTERVIEW: @brendalatorrewrites discusses her debut horror novel, BRUJA’S NEST, with Priya Dames over at Debutiful.net!

The two chat about taboo spiritual practices, her research process, and the underappreciation of telenovelas.

BRUJA’S NEST follows Yolanda, a teenager growing up in a household of abuse and disorder. When her mother sends her to work as a servant at the Fernández De la Rosa estate, she plots to become the woman of the house. The book draws on horror, telenovelas, feminism, class politics, and Indigenous spiritual practices to explore her story. It is available now from @creaturepublishing now.

With Halloween getting closer, I wanted to count down the final two weeks by sharing books that feel perfect for the season. Starting off the countdown with a recommendation that brings witchcraft, body horror, Mexican folklore, family, and plenty of darkness to the table: Bruja’s Nest by @brendalatorrewrites

If you’re looking for something completely unhinged, visceral, strange, and unapologetically gruesome for your October reading, this one deserves a spot on your list.

Bruja’s Nest delivers a story where the supernatural and deeply human collide. It explores complicated relationships, motherhood, class, survival, cultural traditions, and the lengths people may go when desperation begins influencing their choices. Mexican folklore and witchcraft give the story its own identity, while the darker elements become increasingly disturbing as everything unfolds.

And yes, there is GORE.

The body horror is graphic, grotesque, bloody, and sometimes completely outrageous. This is definitely not a quiet little witchy autumn read. There is an almost chaotic energy running through the story that makes it difficult to predict exactly where it will take you next.

What also makes this such an interesting Halloween recommendation is how many different flavors of horror are packed into one book. You get supernatural elements, disturbing imagery, uncomfortable situations, dark humor, family drama, social commentary, and moments that lean into the bizarre and macabre.

It’s witchy. It’s messy. It’s bloody. It’s dramatic. And it certainly isn't afraid to get weird.

If your Halloween TBR needs something that embraces the darker, stranger, and more gruesome side of spooky season, add Bruja’s Nest to the nest.

A horror book I read & loved this year: Bruja's Nest by Brenda LaTorre 🇲🇽

Is this on your tbr?

Def a good one to squeeze in for Halloween 🎃 Highly recommend for fans of Monstrilio. Similar vibes but found Bruja's Nest a little more sinister with more body horror and class war aspects. Love the folklore, focus on womanhood and the Mexico setting. Also the MC is named Yolanda and that was my Grandma's name soooo 💞
