The idea that North American hunters are “trophy hunting” is largely a misconception. In Alberta, hunters are legally required to retrieve and utilize edible meat from any big game animal they harvest. A full freezer is the real goal. taken in Alberta, Canada by @crew.cornell_

“The mountain hunter is a specialist; the one to whom hunting is usually more than just going forth to kill something, for these individuals have an almost obsessive passion for the game.”

As @donnie_vincent once said, “we are hunters but have to be conservationists first”.

I’ve let countless younger bucks walk over the years, waiting for one that carried the weight of age and experience. When I laid eyes on this old mountain buck, I knew the time had come. A moment of gratitude, not triumph, a full-circle reminder of why we hunt. #goodthingshappentothosewhowait taken in Alberta, Canada by @crew.cornell_

I was glassing in hopes of seeing elk when my eyepiece settled on this beautiful chocolate-black bear. I was into it, and the stalk started.

The bear was roughly 250 metres above me and a couple kilometres out. I decided to press aggressively before the thermals switched on me. Moving quickly through the aspens and uneven ground, I climbed elevation fast. The goal was to get above him so he wouldn’t catch my scent.

I planned to hook left for another 100 metres and position myself 20–40 yards above him. But because of the terrain, I overshot where I thought he was and ended up roughly 150 yards above him.

I decided to keep pressing. I got within 75 yards and was confident this big bruin would stand his ground, carrying the confidence of an animal that had been dominant for awhile.

Unfortunately for me, a cold fall wind and a warm gust from the summer past intertwined, swirling the thermals and pushing my scent directly into the bear’s big, pumpkin shaped head. At that point, the bruin knew something was stalking him. He stood on his hind legs, gave the air a sniff, and bolted.

The jig was up.

Lessons learned, and a damn fun stalk nonetheless. taken in Alberta, Canada by @crew.cornell_

A soggy and cold weekend looking for high timber mule deer. Unfortunately the clouds were hanging low, making glassing almost impossible. Regardless, it was great to get out with bow in hand. taken in Alberta, Canada by @crew.cornell_

The time is nigh.

Solidify your hunting plans, try and get out to scout, train/ practice with what you’ll use in the mountains, switch to maintaining your current weight and increase cardio and practice realistic shooting scenarios. taken in Alberta, Canada by @crew.cornell_

The North Thompson understory hits different.

Coming out of Alberta, it’s always fun stepping into country that holds more moisture. It’s pretty damn awesome you can drive 5-7hours from arid Alberta and get into interior rainforests and see different vegetation but the same critters. taken in BC by @crew.cornell_
