I was a pretty hardcore vegetarian for nearly a decade.

I snapped at my grandma for using a knife to cut veggies that had touched meat. Traveled to Argentina for a school trip where I got to sample some of their famous… iceberg lettuce salads. I once cried over a thanksgiving turkey.

And then I started learning to hunt about 6 or 7 years ago and everything changed. I learned to hike off trail in the darkness under starlight, to listen with every molecule, to feel every sense come alive with purpose.

I became intimately connected with the food that I eat in a vital exchange of life and death. And there’s something so beautiful about having to earn that honour by studying the place where it comes from: the details of little water holes, the winding game paths, the passage of sun in aspen meadows.

And then, to carry the weight of sustenance on your own two feet, buoyed by gratitude. It’s a true gift that has taught me how to embrace our heritage as humans and has introduced me some of my most cherished places that wouldn’t appear on any trail app.

Now, we are going into another winter feeling a deep, squirrel-like satisfaction of knowing that we have a freezer laden with meals to share with friends and family.

There’s nothing wrong with being a vegetarian, and hunting isn’t for everyone. But if you do eat meat, it’s a pretty special experience that is so far beyond what’s on your plate.
