Moot Hall, Hexham NE46 1XF
Saturday 8th August 10am – 5pm
Sunday 9th August 10am – 3pm
(step access)

Join us for the second iteration of the exhibition ‘Aurora Deep Time’, installed in the medieval Moot Hall in Hexham, Northumberland for the Cosmic Frequencies Festival 2006 – for two days only!

FESTIVAL TALK: Saturday 8th 12-1pm. Fiona Crisp @crisp_fiona, Luis Guzmán @radix_lucis and Daniela De Paulis @daniela.depaulis discuss contemporary art’s interactions with space science and technology. Tickets can be booked at: www.cosmicfrequencies.org

EXHIBITION TALK: Sunday 9th August 1.30pm at Moot Hall – no booking required, everyone welcome.

Aurora Deep Time is an experimental research project by Sensing Remoteness, a group of artists and scientists from across Northumbria and Newcastle Universities UK. The group looks at the relationship between technology and the sensing human/more-than-human thinking about how the apparatus of Remote Sensing might be approached from philosophical, creative, critical and ethical perspectives.

As well as being embedded in our cultural imaginaries, the aurora is one of the few ways by which we ‘experience’ space weather. Unlike some other species, we do not sense the geo-magnetic environment but our techno-electronic infrastructures - GPS and telecommunications systems for example - are highly vulnerable to the solar storms that affect it.

The immersive installation uses the extreme aurora event of 10/11 May 2024 as a device to reveal the complex interdependence of the spheres that together form our contemporary relationship with space and space weather.

In the medieval period when the Moot Hall was built, the Northern Lights would not have been understood as science but as scripture — as a sky of blood and battling armies; a portent of divine judgement. Aurora Deep Time reminds us that the majesty of the aurora also signals the vulnerability of our modern technology; a different kind of portent to that experienced by our medieval ancestors.

Goodbye to my dear friend and partner in @c_n_o_s_ academic crime @cmborland. This morning at dawn I swam at Waters Meet where the North & South Tyne flow in to one another. It is the last place Christine & I swam together. With a heron watching me, salmon jumping and swallows wheeling, it felt like a fitting farewell to such an extraordinary woman. I will miss your brave quiet wisdom my friend. Swim on.

We are excited to share that Institutional Fieldworking, an interactive research ‘exposition’ within the Journal of Artistic Research (JAR) is now published (link in bio).

Conceived, developed, and produced by several artist-researchers from the Cultural Negotiation of Science group (CNoS) based at Northumbria University, UK, the exposition takes as its springboard a festival of research events, workshops, and exhibitions, Institutional Fieldworking: CNOS@10, convened in autumn of 2023 to mark the group’s tenth anniversary.

The exposition allows the reader to navigate their own route through and between three ‘scales’ of approach, each of which develop multiple ‘nodes’ of enquiry. ‘Scales of Negotiation’ moves through methods to enact interdisciplinary borne of deep-knowledge and trust including nodes such as Provoking and Holding; Collective Imagination and Knottyness; ‘Scales of Institution’ focuses on how these methods are performed within an institutional field and how public permeability might be approached through, for instance, Civic Agency; Kitchen-Table Thinking; or knowledge Disruption. The nodes within ‘Scales of Time, Space and Velocity’ speak of a dynamic range used to unsettle or disorient across technical and material bodies, from Astro-Ecologies to Intimacy, and from Lag Time to Oikos.

Creating the exposition has been a collective act of processing and re-enacting the experimentality of the Institutional Fieldworking programme to share with international audiences. This form of publishing has proven uniquely appropriate to CNoS as a group — not illustrating or reporting the research but instead surfacing and performing the specificity of artistic practice.

Authors: @cmborland @crisp_fiona @somethinggrace; @jacqueline.donachie; @radix_lucis; @lauraharringtonaw; @louisekmackenzie and @alisoldfield

We are extremely grateful to @iamrobsmth for the exposition design and to all the many people who contributed to this research – you are all credited on JAR.
