I have had the pleasure of joining a series of conversations convened at The Cultural Negotiation of Science group at Northumbria University. I first entered this discussion in 2023 through Institutional Fieldworking and an Alternative Data Analysis roundtable, where we asked what our tools, datasets, artefacts and fieldwork methods reveal—not only about the world, but about ourselves, about what love brings close, pushes away and pulls apart. The most recent gathering was called “Tools for the Future.”

These, I guess, are some ways we “produce knowledge”: A life chamber for extremophiles. A robot. A heart-rate monitor. Participatory photography. An ice pack. A Raspberry Pi. A composing stick. A pinhole camera. A knot. Preservation and flow. Sampling and participation. Stability and instability. Hiding and access. Caring so much about something that you feel compelled to freeze it, and then thaw it, over and over again.

Methods of purposeful estrangement. Moving through cycles of pushing things away until we lose them, and pulling them close until they overwhelm us. Estranging ourselves to try to understand, then trying to find our way back to intimacy. Our tools carry rhythms and time, methods carry our love.

Thank you to the wonderful Laura Harrington @lauraharringtonaw and brilliant Fiona Crisp @crisp_fiona for continuing these conversations over the years. They have become, in themselves, a remarkable thing to come back to.

We are excited to share that Institutional Fieldworking, an interactive research ‘exposition’ within the Journal of Artistic Research (JAR) is now published (link in bio).

Conceived, developed, and produced by several artist-researchers from the Cultural Negotiation of Science group (CNoS) based at Northumbria University, UK, the exposition takes as its springboard a festival of research events, workshops, and exhibitions, Institutional Fieldworking: CNOS@10, convened in autumn of 2023 to mark the group’s tenth anniversary.

The exposition allows the reader to navigate their own route through and between three ‘scales’ of approach, each of which develop multiple ‘nodes’ of enquiry. ‘Scales of Negotiation’ moves through methods to enact interdisciplinary borne of deep-knowledge and trust including nodes such as Provoking and Holding; Collective Imagination and Knottyness; ‘Scales of Institution’ focuses on how these methods are performed within an institutional field and how public permeability might be approached through, for instance, Civic Agency; Kitchen-Table Thinking; or knowledge Disruption. The nodes within ‘Scales of Time, Space and Velocity’ speak of a dynamic range used to unsettle or disorient across technical and material bodies, from Astro-Ecologies to Intimacy, and from Lag Time to Oikos.

Creating the exposition has been a collective act of processing and re-enacting the experimentality of the Institutional Fieldworking programme to share with international audiences. This form of publishing has proven uniquely appropriate to CNoS as a group — not illustrating or reporting the research but instead surfacing and performing the specificity of artistic practice.

Authors: @cmborland @crisp_fiona @somethinggrace; @jacqueline.donachie; @radix_lucis; @lauraharringtonaw; @louisekmackenzie and @alisoldfield

We are extremely grateful to @iamrobsmth for the exposition design and to all the many people who contributed to this research – you are all credited on JAR.
