Talk rescheduled! The event has been moved to this Saturday. Hosted in collaboration with @lostworldsinstitute, I'll be giving an overview of my practice @quequedatype and how typeface design connects with linguistics. Hope to see you there!

Progress on Custodian + a page from my sketchbook (palate cleanser). No kerning yet, but it's nice setting it in things I’ve been meaning to read/revisit. Some minor warping caused by a sticky outdoor table.

Presented at TypeLab @typographicsnyc 2026 last Thursday. Thanks to everyone who came by or watched online!

Here are some highlights from my presentation, where I shared the latest progress on my type foundry @quequedatype and its upcoming release, Custodian (a "grassy" sans). Custodian will have dedicated support for North American Indigenous languages and writing systems. by @crisrhernandez

A bit of progress on Custodian Syllabics. Here's a quick look at the support for Inuktitut. I'd love to get this into people's hands, so please reach out if you're interested! ᓇᑯᕐᒦᒃ! by @crisrhernandez

Huge thanks to Beatriz for taking the time to share her incredible practice and insights with us.

Continuing with the spring semester updates, I’m sharing some selected works from the Intro to Visual Communication midterm project: Location Iteration, a multi-week study in which students examine an assigned physical setting and produce a series of visual explorations that reveal it through different formal approaches.

Location Iteration is heavily based on the projects Object Iteration and Image Series I did my BFA1 year at CalArts, developed and instructed by Scott Zukowski. Expanding on Scott’s methodology, I assign each student a specific location based on observations made during their introductory project. This allows me to select specific settings that I believe will challenge their typical habits and offer fresh avenues for exploration. For example, a student comfortable with abstraction might be assigned Market rather than Junkyard to push them toward more intentional motif extraction.

Started teaching this spring! I’m currently leading Intro to Visual Communication and Intermediate Graphic Design Workshop at @ccnycitycollege. We are doing a lot of fun stuff and I wanted to share.

These are some selected works from a project we just wrapped up titled Label Series, a multi-week typographic study in which students develop a series of layouts under progressively shifting constraints.

Label Series is heavily based on the project of the same name (hard to call it anything else) I did my BFA2 year at CalArts, developed and instructed by @misterkeedy, as well as research on the Typographic Permutations project taught by Dan Friedman at Yale in the early 70’s. Many friends have shared similar projects they did in school with me recently. If this looks familiar and we haven’t chatted I’d love to hear about it.
