As part of @caw.syd we’re working with the UTS Visualisation Institute to host a project share about ways we are addressing climate change through our research and teaching. Link in bio to RSVP (free event).

At the start of the session, presenters will each have three-minutes to give an overview of a past, current or prospective project. Following these presentations, there will be time for informal discussions about projects of interest and opportunities to view/interact with creative practice research. All welcome, please bring your own lunch – to minimise waste, this event will not be catered.

@critical_visualisation members presenting work are @andrewxburrell @aasymr @j.sarahjane @zoesado and Jacqueline Gothe. by @critical_visualisation

Who did it better, Bauer in 1810 or Gould in 1817. Noticed today in the @australianmuseum library with brilliant librarian Anina Hainsworth. Possibly Bauer’s watercolour and Gould’s lithograph were created from the same sketch (possibly drawn by neither) or Gould’s was based on Bauer’s. Was Gould John, or Elizabeth? Image making for natural history has complicated “authorship”. Part of an ongoing research collaboration between @zoesado and @climatejenx — with many collaborators. taken in Australian Museum, Sydney by @critical_visualisation

Collage workshop at @nationalmuseumofaustralia run by @zoesado for the River Country Community Day, part of Living on the Edge: Caring for Threatened Places program.

The activity involved creating collage-letters to Lake Burley Griffin, asking how it feels about animals who live in and around it, using prompts written by @cameron.muir_ including “when yabbies burrow deep into your sandy, muddy bed, do you feel their tiny movements?” and “what happens deep down where the platypus forage?”

Thinking about nature from different perspectives can help build a sense of care and responsibility for the environment. Plus, collage is surprisingly therapeutic. by @critical_visualisation

We run ‘Crit Club’ to make space for @utsviscom alumni (and friends) to catch up, make connections, eat cheese and be playfully critical about industry and academia. Guest provocateur @camerontw set us the challenge of designing sankey diagrams based on a set of ideas rather than actual data: what percentage of things in any give space (in this case, the room) are designed, by people with formal design training, by people with design studies training. Like good researchers we ended up with more questions than answers. Like good visual communicators, we used cheeky humour to provoke the provocateur, to open more perspectives for the conversation to expand. This is one example of how universities could make space to have critical conversations that are otherwise difficult to host in commercial practice.

If you’re an alumni, get in touch if you’re interested in our erratically scheduled event: zoe.sadokierski@uts.edu.au

Critical Visualisation engagement activity at @powerhouseparramatta for high school students: Ceridwen Dovey showed two short speculative films about space exploration from her Archival Futures Collective Quartet (in collaboration with @inbetweentimes) and @zoesado ran a critical collage workshop while the students discussed the films and collage as a critical/political image making process.
