Captives, a paper-theatre film in which a platypus and a naturalist discuss colonial collection practices, is now up on the @humansandnature site. Fair warning: it packs a punch.

The Geologic Dialogues series is organized around our recently launched annual online exhibition + printed book The New Geologic Epoch. For each event, member/artists included in the exhibition who are engaged with similar or complimentary mediums/topics, will present their work. For this fourth event in February, we feature artists who are making work about mining, extraction, and earth as art material.

Harriet Hellman, Susana Soares Pinto, Stephanie Garon, and Zoë Sadokierski

Each presenter will have approximately 15 minutes to discuss/present their work, with Q&A to follow.

We run ‘Crit Club’ to make space for @utsviscom alumni (and friends) to catch up, make connections, eat cheese and be playfully critical about industry and academia. Guest provocateur @camerontw set us the challenge of designing sankey diagrams based on a set of ideas rather than actual data: what percentage of things in any give space (in this case, the room) are designed, by people with formal design training, by people with design studies training. Like good researchers we ended up with more questions than answers. Like good visual communicators, we used cheeky humour to provoke the provocateur, to open more perspectives for the conversation to expand. This is one example of how universities could make space to have critical conversations that are otherwise difficult to host in commercial practice.

I honestly don’t know where I conjured this cover design from in the midst of a pandemic teaching semester with two large research projects on the boil, but I think it does some justice to @wellhellojoan’s extraordinary verse novel - which is still haunting me weeks after reading. This is the 10th and final cover I’ve designed for the 4th series of Cordite Books.

Posted @withregram • @unswgalleries Join us on YouTube Live at 3pm this Saturday 26 June, for an in-conversation with Zoë Sadokierski and Timo Rissanen. Both will discuss their collaborative design project PRECARIOUS BIRDS and their reaction — mostly grief — to the precarious circumstances of endangered bird species in the Sixth Extinction.

Zoë Sadokierski is an award-winning book designer, writer and senior lecturer at the UTS School of Design. Zoë is part of Spec Studio, a collective of design researchers exploring narrative approaches to ecological communication.

Timo Rissanen is a researcher, educator, artist and designer working across fashion, art and sustainability. Timo's artistic practice focuses on labour, politics and love through installation and cross-stitched poetry.

Presented in conjunction with the exhibition 'Fernando do Campo: To companion a companion' at UNSW Galleries, 7 May – 31 July 2021.
