The Black Legend comes home this Halloween.

This Halloween, join us for a special screening of a film made right here in our village.

Filmed in Inkpen and neighbouring Combe in 1948, The Black Legend brings the chilling 17th-century tale behind Combe Gibbet to the screen. The directorial debut of Oscar-winning filmmaker John Schlesinger, it features local villagers alongside a young Robert Hardy.

For one night only, we’ll be showing the restored and remastered version, with narration recorded by Hardy himself.

Gather at The Crown & Garter for an atmospheric evening of local cinema, history and dark folklore. There’s something rather special about watching a story unfold in the very place it began.

Saturday 31 October · 7.30pm · The Crown & Garter, Inkpen.

351 years ago this summer, two lovers, George Broomham and Dorothy Newman, plotted a double murder that ended with them both hanging in chains on a windswept Berkshire hilltop. A tale so dark it’s still known today as The Black Legend.

Honesty invited me to The Hangman’s Lunch at The Crown & Garter Inn in Inkpen - a walk up to Combe Gibbet followed by lunch and a live Q&A with genealogist Patricia Sears, who has spent years digging through parish records to uncover newly discovered details about the real story behind the murders!

And there’s more coming.. Honesty are working on bringing the original Black Legend film to a screening near you. watch this space 👀

Genuinely one of the most unexpected and memorable days out I’ve had in Berkshire — if you love history, dark tales, beautiful countryside and a great pub lunch, this one is for you!

We started at the Crown & Garter @crownandgarter @honestygroup - a charming countryside spot, surrounded by nature, with a garden made for slow lunches and no sense of rush 🌱

Good food, relaxed atmosphere, dogs wandering about, and even the occasional horse stopping by… it’s one of those places that just works.

And instead of heading straight home, we carried on to Combe Gibbet for a walk and those wide, open views across the countryside.

Simple, easy, but somehow makes the whole day feel different 🤍

Updating a wine list sounds like a simple enough task. It isn’t, if you do it properly. We went through every bottle asking the same question: Who made this, and why does it matter?

What we ended up with is, I think, one of the most interesting lists we’ve put together at the Crown and Garter. Organic Chablis from a family that certified in 1991, when it was still considered eccentric in Burgundy. A Cahors Malbec from an estate where the winemaker has planted four thousand trees amongst his vines and now farms with horses, as people did before industrial agriculture persuaded us that bigger and faster was better. A rare Portuguese Vinho Verde made from Avesso — an indigenous variety genuinely at risk of disappearing — by a grower who has made it his mission to show what it can do. A Barolo from vines first planted in 1941, certified organic, named one of the Wine Merchant’s Top 100 in 2025.

There is a story behind every label, and we are happy to tell you any of them.

Such a pretty spring day @crownandgarter today! Tutti frutti tulips and narcissi sparkling in the sunshine whilst the many visitors enjoyed the gardens.

It takes time for gardens to grow and mature. We ‘finished’ this Courtyard garden approximately three years ago. When is a garden ever finished! And today it was looking as envisioned almost four years ago.

I was there checking the planting and ‘topping up’ so the gardens continue to look abundant all summer long.
