351 years ago this summer, two lovers, George Broomham and Dorothy Newman, plotted a double murder that ended with them both hanging in chains on a windswept Berkshire hilltop. A tale so dark it’s still known today as The Black Legend.

Honesty invited me to The Hangman’s Lunch at The Crown & Garter Inn in Inkpen - a walk up to Combe Gibbet followed by lunch and a live Q&A with genealogist Patricia Sears, who has spent years digging through parish records to uncover newly discovered details about the real story behind the murders!

And there’s more coming.. Honesty are working on bringing the original Black Legend film to a screening near you. watch this space 👀

Genuinely one of the most unexpected and memorable days out I’ve had in Berkshire — if you love history, dark tales, beautiful countryside and a great pub lunch, this one is for you!

📍300 miles? The Landy heard that as “challenge accepted.”

Last weekend we pointed the bonnet north and tackled the 150-mile drive from Ivybridge, Devon to Hungerford, Berkshire. 🗺️

The satnav confidently told us 3 hours 4 minutes… the Land Rover had other ideas. Five hours later, we gave up watching the clock and decided to enjoy the journey instead. (A skill every classic Land Rover owner eventually masters. 😂)

By the time we arrived at @crownandgarter, we were absolutely shattered, but the gorgeous room and brilliant hospitality soon had us ready for the weekend ahead.

Saturday started with breakfast at Parsons Café in Hungerford (still thinking about those cheese and tomato croissants) before heading to our favourite little town, Marlborough for a mooch and a drink, and finishing the day exploring Newbury. Then it was back to the hotel for a couple of well-earned drinks in the beer garden. 🍻

Then came the journey home…

With nearly 200 miles under our belts already, we weren’t about to let something as minor as an oil leak ruin the trip. (The Land Rover certainly tried. 😅)

After a lunch stop in Wells at @fossolounge, a “recovery stop” at Taunton Deane Services, and sacrificing one very oily microfibre cloth to the Land Rover gods, we eventually rolled back onto the driveway.

Because every great road trip needs:
✅ Good company
✅ Great pubs
✅ A slight mechanical inconvenience
✅ And a story to tell afterwards.

@brookwells.landrover , see you soon!

So… where should we head next? And more importantly… are we taking the Landy? 👀💚

Sunny afternoon providing some chill tunes for the Inkpen C & G BBQ. Fab crowd including family and friends and our own little 'Stage Diver'. Drinks flowing, the usual efficient service from staff, food was yummy especially Chimichurri Steak 😋, pretty gardens overlooking a field of frolicking lambs. Thanks 🙏🏻

We started at the Crown & Garter @crownandgarter @honestygroup - a charming countryside spot, surrounded by nature, with a garden made for slow lunches and no sense of rush 🌱

Good food, relaxed atmosphere, dogs wandering about, and even the occasional horse stopping by… it’s one of those places that just works.

And instead of heading straight home, we carried on to Combe Gibbet for a walk and those wide, open views across the countryside.

Simple, easy, but somehow makes the whole day feel different 🤍

❗️Save this for your next Sunday

Such a pretty spring day @crownandgarter today! Tutti frutti tulips and narcissi sparkling in the sunshine whilst the many visitors enjoyed the gardens.

It takes time for gardens to grow and mature. We ‘finished’ this Courtyard garden approximately three years ago. When is a garden ever finished! And today it was looking as envisioned almost four years ago.

I was there checking the planting and ‘topping up’ so the gardens continue to look abundant all summer long.

Swipe to the end for images before our garden transformation and let me know what you think.
