At a time when cities are facing climate pressure, biodiversity loss and a growing need for accessible community spaces, Kelly Ka Wai Ma’s Shelf to Soil reimagines the library as a living civic ecology: part archive, part garden, part climate classroom.

Designed as a space for gardening, plant education and community exchange, the project brings together a central library and seed archive with immersive temperate and aquatic biomes. These spaces invite visitors to learn, reflect and engage with ecology through the physical experience of growth, care and climate-responsive planting.

With rainwater harvesting, passive environmental strategies, native planting, bioswales and a closed-loop hydrological system, Shelf to Soil transforms a post-industrial canal-side site into a living infrastructure. by @csmarchitecture
