Ever wondered what a percussionist’s favorite instrument is? Or how many hours a musician practices before stepping on stage? 🤔

We’re giving students across Colorado Springs the mic! 🎤 Local students ask the burning questions we’ve all wanted to know, and our Colorado Springs Philharmonic musicians answer.

We had the absolute best time visiting Stetson Elementary School (@district49) and working with their wonderful 2nd-grade classes!

🎬✨ The students asked some incredibly thoughtful questions about JJ’s bassoon and the world of music. One curious student even asked JJ what other instrument he would love to learn to play—watch the video to see his answer!

🦁🎶 A huge thank you to music teacher Mr. Nelson and everyone at Stetson Elementary for welcoming us. We can’t wait to see these amazing students at the Pikes Peak Center for The Carnival of the Animals this October! by @csphilharmonic

🏫🎼 What an unforgettable morning for the top music students in Colorado Springs School District 11! The Center for Future Audiences brought guest artist @jeanbaptistedoulcet —the phenomenal pianist who performed in our season-opener Scheherazade—straight to the @thomasbdohertyhs auditorium.

After an introduction by our Director of the Center for Future Audiences, Joye Levy, Jean-Baptiste immediately captivated the room by diving into a stunning improvised piece inspired by “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

🎹 Students sat in absolute awe as he shared his musical journey, from learning at an early age to building a global career. The highlight of the morning? Brave student Iris took the stage to perform, receiving live, masterclass-level coaching from Jean-Baptiste on everything from phrasing to using her voice as a practice tool.

🎵 From deep discussions on overcoming self-doubt in improvisation to answering the ultimate question—“How did you know you loved music?” (his answer: “I have many things I love, but I realized I could not live without music”)—it was a masterclass in artistry and heart.

Thank you to both Doherty High School and Jean-Baptiste Doulcet for a morning we won’t soon forget! by @csphilharmonic

We had an incredible time with the Colorado Springs Philharmonic Composer-in-Residence @eunike.tanzil at an unforgettable workshop! Thank you to our friends at @coloradocollege for hosting us in Packard Hall.

🌟 Eunike shared her personal creative process (even humming live melodies for the room!), talked about the power of putting your work out into the world via social media, and reminded our young musicians to stay proactive and open to exciting career “side quests.”

The highlight of the night? A live masterclass where three talented student composers—Matthew Redpath, Everett Smith, and Marcus Footman—shared their original music. Eunike projected their scores, played selections on the piano, and gave incredible, hands-on feedback on structure, orchestration, and storytelling.

🎻✨ From game-like cinematic soundscapes to lush orchestral themes, the talent in the room was truly next-level! We wrapped up with an engaging Q&A on film scoring and hardware, followed by a special invite for students to join us at the Pikes Peak Center for an upcoming Scheherazade open rehearsal. by @csphilharmonic

🎻🏫 Getting ready for October is half the fun! The Center for Future Audiences and Matthew Diekman (“Diek”), violist with the Colorado Springs Philharmonic, recently visited Odyssey Elementary’s 2nd-grade classes.

Diek gave students an inside look at the instrument families, showed them how to conduct musicians to play fast, slow, loud, and soft, and kept everyone laughing with his great sense of humor—all topped off with some lovely viola playing!

🐘🐵🎼 We can’t wait to welcome these wonderful students to the Pikes Peak Center this October for The Carnival of the Animals. by @csphilharmonic
