To say that it’s been a challenging time in Los Angeles over the last couple of weeks is a vast understatement. The members of Brazilian greats @cssmusic know this all too well, as this is the adopted home for most of them, and they consider both São Paulo and LA their hometowns. Last year the band came together after an extensive hiatus to play a series of live shows for their 20th anniversary, touring North America and the UK. Their FLOOD-sponsored show at @regenttheaterla on Sunday night in Los Angeles was their last show in the US “for a long while,” with the band heading to Japan for two more live dates before going back on hiatus. While it’s a difficult time to celebrate in LA with our city suffering from the wildfires, the girls of CSS also felt the importance to bring some light, love, and good times to the CSS faithful here. Here’s scenes from their sold-out show last night, where the Regent crowd reveled in that collective love during their enthralling career-spanning set. Celebrate 20 years of @cssmusic Cansei de Ser Sexy with this brand new vinyl pressing. From São Paulo, Brazil comes CSS. Their debut, Cansei de Ser Sexy, Portuguese for “Tired of Being Sexy,” is improbably, unbelievably and nearly eponymously their debut. It is a thick, pulsating thing full of haphazard synths (“Alala”) and a come-on of call and response that tears down any attempt at posturing (“Art Bitch,” “Patins”). It is equal parts rock mantra and throwback into something new, transcending boundaries of genre and geography. It careers full speed into dance territory, into the unknown and untouched, to emerge all hot and bothered with wild electro-rock. Pretension? Absent. Friction? Probable. They are the un-pretension: unfinished, exposed, and throwing all they have right at you. It is quick, tightly-wound, unfastened and supreme. Not a sneer but a giggle. To paraphrase from the Portuguese: “Not only music, but a new way to live with it. Most of us live in Los Angeles, and all of us have a deep love for this city. I know it’s a difficult time, but we hope our show on Sunday serves as a big hug and brings a bit of lightness, even if momentarily. We’re so happy to be able to play one of our last shows of this run in a city that has always welcomed us with open arms. I hope to see you there, and if you can’t make it, we understand.  We’re also so happy to announce our friends @agenderband will support us again. It’s always great to play with them!
