Jennifer King @jenkingstudio in the studio during her recent winter Guest Artist residency with work that will be included in her exhibition, opening this weekend at The Pit @thepitla in Los Angeles!

Persistence of Vision
on view from March 21 - April 30
public reception from 3-5 pm on Sunday March 22nd

The Pit LA
3015 Dolores St, Los Angeles, CA 90065

The exhibition features ten new ceramic works that continue King's practice of experimentation with non-traditional glazing, painting, and high-fire techniques. Drawing from the subconscious, collapsing time and experiences onto the surface, king explores the vase as a historically significant object, relating to storytelling, while reflecting ideas around memory and nostalgia.

From the gallery: King views the vase as an object of adornment, which is emphasized by the use of dangling ceramic flowers and organic forms. These embellishments convey a sense of opulence and vitality, connecting the object to the natural world and imbuing it with a feeling of latent motion.

MyungJin MJ Kim @mjkimstudio in the studio during her recent winter Guest Artist residency! MJ’s work will be included in the two-person exhibition Holding Time with the work of CSULB Ceramic Arts alumnus Elyse Pignolet @epignolet opening this weekend at the Long Beach Museum of Art ! @lbmaorg

From the museum: The Long Beach Museum of Art is pleased to present Holding Time, an exhibition bringing together the work of Southern California artists Elyse Pignolet and MyungJin Kim, whose ceramic vessels function as platforms for storytelling, cultural heritage, and activism. While their visual languages and narratives differ, both artists move beyond the conceptual ceramic traditions established by Southern California. Instead, they return to historically rooted forms of vases, pots, tiles, and mirrors, using them as vessels to communicate personal and culturally resonant narratives.

Across their practices and mediums, botanicals and decorative motifs form a shared visual language. Floral ornamentation and natural imagery appear throughout their surfaces, creating layers of symbolism that explore themes of femininity, mythology, spirituality, cultural identity, and social history. These ornamental elements are not merely aesthetic; they act as visual frameworks through which the artists examine inherited traditions and contemporary experience.

Material also plays a central role in their practices. Pignolet works with a white clay body that references porcelain and its global history, drawing upon the familiar language of blue-and-white floral decoration to consider cultural exchange, colonial histories, and visual stereotypes embedded in decorative traditions. Kim, by contrast, works in terracotta, one of humanity’s oldest fired materials, embracing its deep historical associations with ritual, domestic life, and early forms of communication.

Together, their works reveal how traditional ceramic forms can hold contemporary narratives, bridging past and present through clay while reflecting the enduring human impulse to record stories through objects.

With great sadness we learned yesterday of the passing of Jasmine Little, who did a Guest Artist residency with us from December 2024 to January 2025, during which she produced fourteen substantial (some of them monumental) works in the span of six or seven weeks. Jasmine returned to participate in our summer 2025 workshop, working in a makeshift workspace in the middle of our kiln yard for all to see, and she was back with us for several weeks this winter working on a few new pieces.

Jasmine was a wonderful presence in our learning and making community: an inspired and inspiring maker, a respectful and helpful participant in a communal workspace, a generous and open person to talk with, and a powerful creative and professional role model among our students.

When I last saw Jasmine nearly three weeks ago, we had a lovely, buoyant conversation about her work. We discussed plans for an upcoming talk about her work she wanted to give for our students. Jasmine loved working at CSULB, felt connected to our community, and wanted to give back. She mentioned that she might do a little traveling, and that after that she would like to volunteer in our ceramics area, not making her own work as a Guest Artist but helping others with theirs and just helping out around the place in any way she could. I welcomed that idea, and I looked forward to it.

We talked while I helped Jasmine load three new pieces into our kilns and then started them preheating. Though I was not on campus the next day, Jasmine came in and did a long day of firing, texting in the morning to check in with me as she was getting started, and texting again with excitement at the end of the day: “All done!”

That was the last time Jasmine came to campus. After the kilns cooled, we unloaded the pieces and I sent her photos of them, looking forward to when she could come and see them for herself.

To her family, to her friends, to those who worked with her, and to all who feel this tremendous loss, we feel it with you, we offer our condolences, and we look forward to joining in the celebration of our shared memories of Jasmine. by @csulbccc

Excited for this exhibition opening today, organized by current CSULB Ceramics BFA student Miguel Zavala and featuring work by several artists who in different ways have been part of our learning and making community.

Ahí, en la casa is a group exhibition where the family backyard party is not just a celebration but is a form of fine art. The phrase ahí, en la casa translates as “at the house,” and is a common response to the question “Where is the party?” when inviting a loved one to a celebration.

The family backyard party could be anything from an asada, or BBQ, to an extravagant wedding, quinceñera or baptism. From ceremony to desmadre the family backyard party is an invitation to explore the home, an intimate space, as the heart of where community develops. Artists in this exhibition reframe family, community, food, sound, and dance to share with the larger Long Beach community.

Featuring Work by:
Aaron Orozco | Alan Mendez | Alexis Miranda Gaona | Cindy Rocha
Claudia V. Solórzano | Darren Alvarez | Delilah Rios Emily Perez
Esmeralda Felix | Francisco Baldonado | Isidro Pérez Garcia
Jocelyn Duarte | José M. Loza | Melissa Meza Monica Meza
Nizgui Azul Gomez | Trinity Juarez | Veronica Preciado
