Series Spotlight: ‘Indyebo yakwaNtu’ (Black Bounty) | Meaning “the wealth of the people” or “the wealth of humanity”, ‘Indyebo yakwaNtu’ imagines abundance beyond material possession: as something inherited, shared, and sustained across generations.

The series marked a defining expansion in Zizipho Poswa’s sculptural practice. Conceived during a residency at the Center for Contemporary Ceramics at California State University Long Beach in 2023, where she worked under the mentorship of renowned American ceramic artist Tony Marsh, it gave Poswa access to industrial-scale kilns and the opportunity to push her hand-coiled process to unprecedented dimensions. The resulting sculptures, some exceeding three metres in height, remain the largest ceramic works she has produced to date.

In these vast ceramic silos, intimate objects of adornment are radically amplified. Jewellery, beadwork, hair combs, pins, and protective objects drawn from across the African continent are reimagined as bronze-cast crowns, transforming adornment into a language of ancestry, identity, status, spirituality, and collective inheritance.

First presented in 2024 to inaugurate Southern Guild Los Angeles, ‘Indyebo yakwaNtu’ (Black Bounty) forms part of ‘iMbewu’ (The Seed), now on view at Southern Guild New York until 21 August.

Happy Leo SZN! Another year around the sun 🦁♌️🌞! I’m in California for the summer, back as a resident @csulbccc making work for my upcoming show at The Pit (OVUM opens @thepitla 9/12, 5-7pm)! I’ve been missing NY & my community there but it feels so good to have this time here in the studio, making work in my home state. I’m so grateful for my life & so happy to be alive! I’m grateful for my family, my chosen family, for NYC which I ❤️, my neighbors & community upstate, clay & ceramics, cats, coffee, plants & their magic, upstate bonfires, disco balls, fuzzy socks in winter, dance parties, nature trails, wild turkey sightings. And waking up to so many texts from the east coast. I love being alive & I don’t take this life for granted!🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

This was the storefront for South Willard before we moved in 2017
A car crashed into the shop in the middle of the night completely bending the storefront but somehow not breaking the window. The car proceeded to crash into Quality restaurant which was designed by Roy Mcmakin @domesticfurnituremcmakin smashing the tables and chairs he made.

Our insurance wouldn’t cover the damages because they said it was the outside of the building and it was too expensive to fix. Matt Paweski @m_paweski came up with this solution to build this sculpture to hide the crooked storefront. It looked better than ever

March 1 we will start doing shop exhibits within the shop and these two scallops Matt made will demarcate the space again. The first of the new series will be Paz G @kilns opening this Sunday March 1 from 4 to 6 PM

Come by and have a look the show will be up through April 19

On a side note that sculpture in the window is from a show @sylviesylviesylviesylvie made in 2017 with the help of @csulbccc
