Today, we’re announcing a $5 million gift from Bohemian Foundation that will advance CSU’s leadership in energy research and permanently fund student programs focused on democracy and the arts.

“This gift advances our capacity for groundbreaking energy innovation, and it also ensures that two of our most distinctive student initiatives will continue to provide generations of young people with opportunities to lead, create and contribute.” — President Amy Parsons

$3.8 million will increase capacity at CSU’s Powerhouse Energy Campus, a global hub for advanced and low-carbon energy solutions, industry collaboration and entrepreneurial scaleup. The investment will help expand the Powerhouse footprint and meet growing demand for research in grid resilience, wildfire, advanced fusion, nuclear technologies and energy access. It will also support more engineering capstone projects, student entrepreneurship and a fabrication academy open to students in every major.

$1.2 million will endow the Colorado Democracy Prize and the President’s Art Prize, both launched last year. The Colorado Democracy Prize funds workshops, seed grants, mentorship and an annual award for student-led civic projects. The Art Prize is a juried award for artwork by CSU students and recent alumni from all disciplines, with students leading the selection and curation. The prizes build on years of CSU leadership focused on student success, strengthening democracy, civic engagement, public dialogue and creative expression.

Thank you to Bohemian Foundation for decades of investment in innovative ideas, student opportunities and programs that strengthen communities across Colorado and around the world. This extraordinary gift supports our broader institutional expertise and advances priorities that have shaped CSU’s work for years.

As he returns to CSU for Homecoming this weekend, Brady O’Neill can boast of a career of creating moments for sports fans – first as CAM the Ram as an undergrad liberal-arts student, then as Dinger, the Colorado Rockies’ dinosaur mascot, and now as an assistant director of marketing for the Rockies. The first in his family to earn a university degree, Brady graduated in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in speech communication and completed the coursework and certifications needed to teach theater, speech and English in Colorado.

“I know everyone looks back on their college life with a glowing nostalgia, but I really was given this group of people that I belonged to,” Brady said. Even now, he experiences “bubbles of nostalgia” – memories attached not just to games, but also to the people with whom he experienced them.

Fall field trip to the @csumountaincampus 📍🌲

Last month, Vida students spent a day at the CSU Mountain Campus engaging in team building exercises, challenging themselves with new activities, and exploring our classroom at 9,000 ft.

They got an early preview of the fall colors, too. 🍂

What does it mean to become America?

This fall, CSU musicians are marking the nation’s 250th anniversary by exploring that question through music, bringing stories of identity, migration, belonging, resistance and cultural exchange to the concert stage.

At the center is Rose Wollman’s “Becoming America,” a new album featuring five newly commissioned works by composers from historically marginalized communities. Wollman received a $7,000 CSU Democracy Small Grant to support the album’s recording and release.

Oct. 7 | Becoming America
Wollman joins soprano Anne Slovin and pianist Hyeji Seo for the album’s free release concert, featuring music by Francisco Cortes Alvarez, Rene Orth, Nailah Nombeko, Cris Derksen and Tamuz Nissim.

And there’s more:
Oct. 8 | 1876 — Wind Symphony celebrates Colorado’s 150th anniversary and the people, history and culture that shaped the Centennial State.

Oct. 12 | The American Soundscape — Faculty artists explore the many traditions, journeys and voices that have shaped American music, from Florence Price and Chickasaw composer Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate to immigrant composer Sergei Rachmaninoff.

Oct. 13 | From Sea to Shining Sea — Symphonic Band celebrates both Colorado’s 150th and America’s 250th with music spanning the American landscape.

Oct. 15 | Arts of Resistance: Music as Movement — University Symphony Orchestra explores music as witness, protest, hope and collective action, including Margaret Bonds’ musical response to the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

Together, these concerts offer different ways to listen to the American story — and consider whose voices shape it.

You can often find the Emmy winners John Barnhardt and Boyan Bashovski around campus with cameras in hand, but on this week’s episode of The Next 150 podcast, they joined me in front of the camera. We talked about how a land-grant approach to filmmaking is being used to train the next generation of filmmakers at @ColoradoStateUniversity. They also opened up about the hands-on culture they’re building here and their advice for students who want to get behind the camera.

CSU alum John Barnhardt studied poetry here before becoming a Daytime Emmy Award-winning filmmaker for his directing and cinematography on “Born to Explore with Richard Wiese.” He returned to Fort Collins to direct “An Open Door,” a documentary on CSU Distinguished Professor Temple Grandin. And today he is director of multimedia production and storytelling for our @CSUAgSci. Boyan Bashovski is studying journalism and media communication after transferring from @FRCCEdu and joined John’s team as a director. Alongside several of his classmates, Boyan won a Heartland Student Production Emmy for “Pop Punk Grandma” earlier this year.

John and Boyan — congratulations on all your successes, and thank you for your ongoing commitment to telling CSU’s stories and for empowering our students to tell their own.

From Norway, with new perspectives 🇳🇴✨

As 2025-26 Fulbright Scholars, Liberal Arts faculty members Naitnaphit Limlamai (English Education) and Rosa Martey (Journalism & Media Communication) spent the past year exploring big questions about teaching, learning, culture, technology, and human connection.

As a Fulbright Roving Scholar, Limlamai traveled throughout Norway leading workshops on American culture, literacy, and educational inequality while gaining new insight into education, identity, and what it means to be a teacher in today's world.

At the University of Bergen, Martey researched how AI chatbots influence users and decision-making, exploring how people can better understand and navigate their interactions with AI tools.

Together, their experiences highlight the power of international exchange to spark new ideas, challenge assumptions, and strengthen research and teaching at CSU.

Democracy showed up at the tailgate!

Our Strengthening Democracy team brought the energy to Saturday's tailgate with temporary tattoos, a freshly bedazzled tablecloth, and the wildly popular Rams Vote rally towels.

We helped people register to vote, check their voter registration, learn about upcoming Democracy programming and get a preview of the CLA Democracy Summit, Oct. 26–27.

Most importantly, we got to connect with the CSU and Fort Collins community and have some great conversations about democracy, civic life and what it looks like to participate.

Big thanks to ASCSU and the City of Fort Collins for partnering with us, and a special shoutout to the @csucpd students who represented Strengthening Democracy and kept the conversations going all day.

And yes, we still have rally towels. 😉 by @csuliberalarts

This summer CSU Anthropology student and photographer Lacey Dippold was part of the 2026 CSU Archaeology Field School that surveyed and excavated at archaeological sites across northern and eastern Colorado. In addition to digging and sifting, Lacey was also snapping and framing and catching dramatic scenes of discovery, grit, silliness, exhaustion, and community as the class worked and learned afield over five weeks, including camping on the Eastern Plains for more than a week. Lacey formerly ran a studio specializing in newborn and maternity photography but now focuses on school and family.

The CSU Archaeology Field School has been running since 1969. Professor Jason LaBelle (ANTH BA 1995) has directed field schools as faculty since 2009 and attended the program as a student in 1993. Many of this summer's field sites on private lands have served as CSU learning and research areas for decades. The class (ANTH 260/460) is often regarded as one of students' favorites, where they not only learn and apply archaeological methods and record stories of the ancient past, but also learn about teamwork and build friendships that often extend for years beyond graduation.

Read about the Archaeology Field School in the upcoming STATE Magazine feature story, "Unearthing the Past," publishing in October! Two students excavate a marked section of an archaeological site. by @csuliberalarts
