(ME)ALS A suite of 30 Eco-UV prints on handmade recycled paper castings from CSU dining hall food trays I merged high resolution images of my own eye and the eyes of various animal species manually through GIMP without the use of AI technology. Each animal represents a species consumed by humans: cow, pig, sheep, goat, tuna, turkey, chicken, elk. The hybridized eyes shift from a panoramic format [one eye on each side of the head, as is natural for these animals] and are reoriented into a binocular format [two eyes looking forward in a more confrontational format like most predatory species]. Printing these images on handmade recycled paper castings from CSU dining hall food trays encourages us to consider the consumption of animals as previously living creatures, not just lumps of mechanical flesh on a plate. I eat meat and so does my family. My wife is a veterinarian and holds a deep compassion for animal kin. We have raised chickens at our home in the past for their eggs and meat. Consumption of other species is a choice, but one that I do not take lightly. Sometimes our sense of reality can become distorted when the grocery store presents us with mechanized representations of flesh piles that used to carry consciousness. As my two young children grow, I want to answer their questions about meat honestly and instill in them a genuine respect and understanding for where their food comes from. In Italian culture, particularly in Rome, there is a rich tradition of the ‘Cucina Povera’ to prepare amazing pasta dishes with organ meat, or plates of slowly cooked oxen tail. Those dishes are a reminder of human struggle and making the most of every bit of an animal. In my opinion, those simple dishes that were built out of necessity by the impoverished and perfected for flavor over many generations are testaments to love and resilience.

There’s no research question too big for a Ram to tackle. 🔬🐏 Thousands of our undergraduates are already doing research at @ColoradoStateUniversity, which means they don’t have to wait until graduation to start making an impact. They’re working alongside world-class faculty, following their curiosity, and solving real problems in communities across Colorado and the world. So proud of every Ram asking “what if?” and “what next?” Swipe to see 10 phenomenal projects happening across CSU right now, and read the full special SOURCE report with my bio link. Keep researching Rams! Yea or neigh | Jocelyn Howard & Dr. Carleigh Fedorka   Through a clinical drug trial, students in the Department of Animal Sciences (@CSUAnSci) are examining ties between the immune system and pregnancy in horses. Their findings may apply to reproductive problems in other animals – including people. Night shift | Emily Eager   People who work night shifts are more likely to have health problems, ranging from high blood pressure to cardiovascular disease. But one CSU student, working in the Department of Health and Exercise Science (@CSUHES), is finding positive effects on health when shift workers fast at night. Grasping art | Caitlyn BucknerBackstrom   How and why did humans evolve the ability to create art? It’s a question that captivated a student in the Department of Anthropology and Geography (@CSUAnthGr). Through her research, she deduced that, to create art, human ancestors needed not only imagination but also the hand anatomy to realize it. Tiny titans | Artemis Campos, Zoey Montoya, Cedar Aumiller, & Hailee Nolan   Biology students are investigating the survival of microscopic organisms after wildfire has scorched the trees where they live. We’re talking nematodes, ciliates, rotifers and tardigrades. Their resilience can impact forest recovery after wildfires that are increasing in both frequency and severity. Cyberloafing | Jackson Wall & Dr. Chris Henle   The digital dalliance known as cyberloafing – when employees use the internet for personal reasons while on the clock – may have some benefit for businesses because it helps workers transition from one task to another, a Graphic for the C S U special report Students and Discoveries, with the subtitle Undergraduate Research Changing Lives and the Colorado State University logo. Not far from Colorado State University’s main campus, up Rist Canyon, you’ll find a 70-acre forest with a root system supporting a vast landscape shaped by family, forestry, and a lasting commitment to conservation. This special place is called Borden Memorial Forest, and it was donated by Tom Borden to Colorado State University. A Colorado State forester and conservationist, Borden wanted to practice forestry on this property, and he also wanted people to experience the forest for themselves. That desire to learn from the land, care for it, and share it with others is a legacy that continues at Borden Memorial Forest today. Through research, forest management, and education, Warner College of Natural Resources has created opportunities for students, researchers, and visitors to learn from the landscape and experience the forest themselves. The work connects generations of forest management while honoring the person who helped make that learning possible. Tom Borden’s daughter, Beth Borden Wright, told her dad’s story to Journalism and Media Communication Master’s student Isabelle Wasserman, who spent the summer at Borden Memorial Forest through her CSU Extension Internship. Read Isabelle’s article at the link in our bio! Three people wearing hard hats stand in a grassy forest clearing with mountains in the background.

Congratulations to Anthropology doctoral student Isabel Heslin who was awarded a Graduate Women in Science National Fellowship from the Ethel Allen Fellowship for Anthropological Research! The funding is supporting Isabel's dissertation field research in Kenya, which started this summer. Isabel's research aims to measure and quantify the nutritional composition of modern eastern African ungulate carcasses and other available resources consumed by predators like lions and, formerly, by early humans. This work will give insight into early humans' diets and foraging behavior, with a focus on how protein and fat constraints may have shaped key adaptations in our genus. To get that data, Isabel is tracking lion kills at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya to assess the amount of edible tissue and bone marrow on carcasses and taking samples for nutritional analysis — although sometimes that can mean waiting until the lions finish their lunch! Isabel is advised by Associate Professor Andrew Du. Images show: 1) Isabel Heslin standing next to truck during fieldwork in Kenya, Summer 2026; 2) Isabel Heslin taking photos of a lion kill at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya; 3) Isabel Heslin, next to a sign marking the equator at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya; 4) Isabel Heslin holds an ungulate bone left over from a lion predation.
