Earlier this year, Melanie Brousseau, a student studying economics and political science, teamed up with Cheyenne Phillips and Judah Weir, students in computer science and biology, to develop the Harvest Health Initiative for the National Collegiate Policy Challenge, hosted by the University of Chicago’s Institute of Politics.

Their journey took them from CSU’s campus Pitchfest to the national stage in Chicago. But the work didn’t end with the competition.

This summer, the team’s research was featured in a monthly report from CSU’s Regional Economic Development Institute (REDI), co-authored with faculty member Prof. Anita Alves Pena.

The report digs into a key part of their process that didn’t make it into the original story. After conversations with two health care leaders, the team moved away from their original mobile clinic model and toward a strategy focused on supporting the rural clinics already serving Colorado’s farmworkers.

It’s a powerful example of what can happen when students bring different disciplines to the same problem—and stay open to where the research leads.

And now, a new group of CSU students will have the opportunity to take on the challenge.

The National Collegiate Policy Pitchfest is back for its second year—facilitated by @csustraayercenter and @csucpd. Students interested in participating can learn more at the Pitchfest Open House on September 24 from 4:30-5:30 p.m in LSC 304.

Last year’s idea made it to Chicago and into published research. Where will this year’s ideas go? by @csupolisci

Have you ever driven past an abandoned or unused building and thought, "Hmm, I wonder what they're gonna do with that?" 🤔 Well do we have an internship highlight for you!

One of @csuextension's specialty areas is offering support and resources for community and economic development. This summer, Nafisa Nawar Aava, a grad student studying Political Science, participated in a Chaffee County Redevelopment Feasibility Study. The focus of the study was an 80,000 sq. ft. greenhouse facility in Chaffee County that is currently unused, so Nafisa evaluated potential community-serving uses for the site as part of her internship.

She shared some of photos of the facility and we can't wait to see her findings at the Extension intern poster session in October!

🔹 Nafisa Nawar Aava (center) with her mentors Willie Wilkins (right) and Monica Pless (left) just before Nafisa's first county meeting. This was their first meeting in person and Nafisa says, "It was a joy working with them!"

🔹 Willie Wilkins looking at the benches in the greenhouse in Salida. This was Nafisa's first visit inside the greenhouse facility.

🔹 The greenhouse facility from the outside. Nafisa says, "This is only one side though, the whole facility is much bigger."

🔹 A tour of the control room.

🔹 One of the bays inside the greenhouse facility. Each bay has around 24 benches.

🔹 A view on the way to Salida for visiting the greenhouse facility.

🔹 Checking out the heating instrument inside the greenhouse facility. Three people are smiling in front of a building entrance with double doors. One wears sunglasses on their head, one has a hat with a logo, and another has glasses and a Colorado State University shirt. They are holding clipboards and a bottle. by @csupolisci

Saira Hafeez (@cyrahafeez907) is earning her Ph.D. in Political Science and Environmental Policy and is spending her summer in Grand County for a community wildfire preparedness internship! ⛰️

As part of her work, Saira is getting a hands-on introduction to wildfire science, community risk reduction, and collaborative mitigation planning within Grand County. Saira is also contributing to the countywide wildfire risk assessment program, where she's gaining practical experience evaluating both home-level and broader community wildfire vulnerabilities. In doing so, she's understanding the factors that shape local fire risk and the tools used to assess and reduce it. 🪵🧯

So far, Saira has participated in multiple Community Chipping Day events with the Grand County Wildfire Council team, taken a field trip to know more about firefighters' work and procedures, and attended the Grand County Government's Economic Summit. Nice work, Saira! A group of five individuals stands outdoors holding a banner that reads "Grand County's Open Lands, Rivers, and Trails Fund" with a nature scene. A logo for Grand County is visible on the left side of the banner. In the background, there are trees and work vehicles. by @csupolisci
