Democracy showed up at the tailgate! Our Strengthening Democracy team brought the energy to Saturday's tailgate with temporary tattoos, a freshly bedazzled tablecloth, and the wildly popular Rams Vote rally towels. We helped people register to vote, check their voter registration, learn about upcoming Democracy programming and get a preview of the CLA Democracy Summit, Oct. 26–27. Most importantly, we got to connect with the CSU and Fort Collins community and have some great conversations about democracy, civic life and what it looks like to participate. Big thanks to ASCSU and the City of Fort Collins for partnering with us, and a special shoutout to the @csucpd students who represented Strengthening Democracy and kept the conversations going all day. And yes, we still have rally towels. 😉

Earlier this year, Melanie Brousseau, a student studying economics and political science, teamed up with Cheyenne Phillips and Judah Weir, students in computer science and biology, to develop the Harvest Health Initiative for the National Collegiate Policy Challenge, hosted by the University of Chicago’s Institute of Politics. Their journey took them from CSU’s campus Pitchfest to the national stage in Chicago. But the work didn’t end with the competition. This summer, the team’s research was featured in a monthly report from CSU’s Regional Economic Development Institute (REDI), co-authored with faculty member Prof. Anita Alves Pena. The report digs into a key part of their process that didn’t make it into the original story. After conversations with two health care leaders, the team moved away from their original mobile clinic model and toward a strategy focused on supporting the rural clinics already serving Colorado’s farmworkers. It’s a powerful example of what can happen when students bring different disciplines to the same problem—and stay open to where the research leads. And now, a new group of CSU students will have the opportunity to take on the challenge. The National Collegiate Policy Pitchfest is back for its second year—facilitated by @csustraayercenter and @csucpd. Students interested in participating can learn more at the Pitchfest Open House on September 24 from 4:30-5:30 p.m in LSC 304. Last year’s idea made it to Chicago and into published research. Where will this year’s ideas go?
