There's a version of travel that gives back to the local community and wildlife.

At Gorilla Conservation Camp, every stay supports gorilla conservation and the local community around Bwindi

Staying with us is more than a night's sleep near the forest.

This World Tourism Day, we celebrate travelers who choose destinations that protect what makes them worth visiting in the first place.

When you come see the gorillas, stay with us, and leave knowing that you have #TravelledWithACause.

Happy #WorldTourismDay

Day 5: Coffee Safari, Batwa experience and finale.

The LEAP Northwood students sorted and brewed their own #arabicacoffee during Gorilla Conservation Coffee’s coffee safari.

Then went to the Batwa cultural experience tour and learnt how the Batwa made fire, lived, hunted, and cooked in the forest. They later squeezed in a friendly football match with local kids.

The trip ended with dinner and parting gifts made of wooden placards. Each wooden placard featured one single word for each student, teacher and staff member who were on this journey.

What a trip!

Day 4 was THE day! Gorilla tracking through Bwindi Impenetrable Forest with @gladyskalemazikusoka led the LEAP Northwood students to the Habinyanja gorilla family.

They saw the lead silverback, the adult female gorilla and their little adorable son. Words don't really do this experience justice.

In the end, the students got certificates to prove that they participated in mountain gorilla tracking. They were elated!

Day 3 = school field trip, but make it Ugandan.

The Northwood LEAP students interacted with primary school teachers and saw the pupils’ genius dustbin made from plastic bottles for their Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths (STEAM) programme facilitated by CTPH and funded by National Geographic.

They then headed to a secondary school to set up a chicken project (part of the STEAM programme too), and interact with the students there. The day ended with a forest walk to THREE waterfalls, where they learnt more about the mountain gorillas, and had a very well-earned swim.

Day 2 of our Northwood LEAP students' Uganda adventure.

The students met Charity Natukunda.

She's a Village Health and Conservation Team (VHCT) volunteer, and her home is a model of health and hygiene.

It has a tippy tap for hand washing, a flourishing food garden, and a clean latrine.

The students also listened to CTPH's community field officer and CTPH’s wildlife vet and learnt how gorilla health and human health are connected.

Day 1 of our Northwood LEAP students' Uganda adventure.

A game drive and boat cruise through Queen Elizabeth National Park, then off to Bwindi for dinner under the stars at the #GorillaConservationCamp.

This is only the beginning of their conservation, wildlife, and community adventure.

Our Group had an incredible experience veiwing Mountain Gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

The work done in Communities beyond the park borders is instrumental in the success of the species. The team led by my good friend Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka founded Conservation through Public health which performs non-invasive sampling of the faeces which determines the well-being of the Apes and the adjacent Community.

Gorilla Tourism accounts for US$35 million per annum which is half the revenue of Uganda Wildlife Authority.

Its a fascinating experience. Worth a Visit.

We just welcomed Northwood School LEAP students to Uganda for the second time! It is always a pleasure hosting students from around the world who come to learn from our model at Conservation Through Public Health and understand our holistic approach to protecting the mountain gorillas and supporting the local communities, while getting to know local students at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Beyond the learning experience, they will also get to enjoy the beauty of Uganda, our rich culture, delicious food, warm people, beautiful weather, and so much more!

We invite more students from across the world to come and learn with us.
