“They can doubt you, but you shouldn’t doubt yourself.”
—Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka(@gladyskalemazikusoka

Have you ever doubted yourself even when you knew what was right for you?

Dr. Gladys loved animals from an early age. But working with mountain gorillas in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park gave that love a direction.

Seeing how vulnerable they were to habitat loss and diseases passed from people she decided to become a wildlife veterinarian.

As Uganda’s first wildlife veterinarian, she encountered people who questioned what a vet could contribute to conservation. Over time, they saw sick animals recover and began to understand the value of her work.

She went on to found Conservation Through Public Health, connecting wildlife conservation with the health and livelihoods of surrounding communities.

But even as her work grew, other people’s opinions didn’t disappear.

Dr. Gladys shared that she welcomes advice, but she doesn’t have to follow every suggestion or please everyone to stay true to her calling.

I admire her passion for protecting gorillas while also helping the people living beside them. And her reminder that we can listen to others without losing our own voice.
Named one of CNN’s 2026 Heroes @cnnheroes, Dr. Gladys reminds us that we can listen to others without losing our own voice.

When have you doubted yourself, but decided to trust your own voice in the end?

Happy World Gorilla Day from Gorilla Conservation Coffee and @moneyrowbeans to you!

This World Gorilla Day, we're celebrating this year's theme, "Restoring Indigenous Forests for Gorilla Survival and Community Resilience".

At Gorilla Conservation Coffee, we encourage our 630 smallholder farmers (230 of whom are women) to practise agroforestry. These trees help protect and enrich the soil and create the perfect conditions for coffee cherries to develop their rich, fruity flavours.

Happy #WorldGorillaDay from us at Gorilla Conservation Coffee to you!

"Conservation is a shared responsibility, and together we can ensure that the mountain gorillas continue to thrive."

-Nebat Kasozi Atuhura, Biodiversity Manager (Wetland & Forest), TotalEnergies

We are grateful to @totalenergies_ug for sharing this special video celebrating mountain gorillas and the importance of their conservation.

Together with our partners, we continue to promote a future where gorillas, people and the environment thrive together.

Happy #WorldGorillaDay!

"The One Health holistic approach is making a great difference in the field and an impact on the conservation efforts locally."

Our recent volunteer, Michelle Asbury, spent time with our community health team, learning about how we integrate the One Health model in gorilla conservation and community wellbeing.

She participated in our community work and recounts seeing the improvements over time in the community data and in the input of the community leaders, and took part in gorilla sample data analysis in our laboratory in order to identify where health intervention is required.

Hope you enjoy her World Gorilla Day message to you!

Happy #WorldGorillaDay!

On 14 September 2026, we joined @volcanoes_safaris at the official opening of the Bwindi Gorilla Conservation Centre, where CTPH is featured.

Congratulations to Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust for creating this space where tourists and other visitors, researchers, and community members can see firsthand how gorilla health, human health, and livelihoods are connected.

We also extend our thanks to Mr. Kevin James, Part-time CFO and former COO of Volcanoes Safaris, for joining the CTPH Board in 2025, a step that has further deepened the ties between our two organisations.

The team led by our co-founder Lawrence Zikusoka included Lonard Arineitwe, Laurence Muruhura, Gracious Twebaze and Martin Mujuni, who represented us on this momentous occasion.

Day 5: Coffee Safari, Batwa experience and finale.

The LEAP Northwood students sorted and brewed their own #arabicacoffee during Gorilla Conservation Coffee’s coffee safari.

Then went to the Batwa cultural experience tour and learnt how the Batwa made fire, lived, hunted, and cooked in the forest. They later squeezed in a friendly football match with local kids.

The trip ended with dinner and parting gifts made of wooden placards. Each wooden placard featured one single word for each student, teacher and staff member who were on this journey.

What a trip!

How can communities play a role in preventing and controlling disease among the great apes?

Our Veterinary Officer, Dr Allan Ainembabazi, answered this question at this year’s African Primatological Society Congress through a presentation on a comparative study that CTPH conducted in the Northern sector of Bwindi, titled "One Health Community-based Intervention on Ascaris Infection in Mountain Gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park".

The study speaks to this year's conference theme, “Ethical Primatology”, which recognises the vital role indigenous and local communities play in conserving Africa's primates, and shows how their involvement can work towards disease prevention and control.

Disease is increasingly recognised as one of the leading threats to great apes. Therefore, communities living around protected areas need access to basic health services and the knowledge to make healthy decisions to prevent disease and keep the great apes healthy.

A big thank you to our donors who made our participation possible in Cameroon.

At the 4th #AfricanPrimatologicalSociety Congress 2026 held in Cameroon, our Programme Manager Ebenezer Paul presented findings on CTPH's One Health Model Households Approach and its impact on human-gorilla health risks and human-wildlife conflict around Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

The One Health Model Households Approach helps households improve across human, animal, and environmental health together, rather than only focusing on sanitation or conservation separately. Since gorillas share 98.4% of our genetic material, the same practices that protect families (safe sanitation, hygiene, and good livestock management) also reduce disease risk for gorillas at the human-wildlife interface.

So far 10,667 households and over 54,000 people, across 8 frontline parishes (59 villages) bordering Bwindi have been reached, supported by 430 trained Village Health and Conservation Teams (VHCTs) conducting behaviour change coaching and quarterly re-scoring.

Great apes cannot be conserved without addressing the health of the communities living alongside them. This approach has proven to also be a more affordable, sustainable path to impact than enforcement-only approaches.

CTPH has now extended this model household approach beyond Bwindi, promoting community coexistence with wildlife to Virunga National Park in DRC, where 16 VHCT leaders completed a Training of Trainers in January 2026.

A big thank you to our donors who made our participation possible in Cameroon.
