In an effort to promote food security and resilience in communities around Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, CTPH has launched the 4th round of the Ready to Grow Project with support from National Geographic Society.

We are supporting an additional 1,500 most vulnerable households around Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Bujengwe, Mukono, Buremba, Mpungu, Ngara and Muramba parishes in Kanungu District, as well as Rubuguri and Nkuringo Town councils in Kisoro District, making a total of 4,500 households since the project began during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Each of the beneficiary households has been given a package of 7 different easy-to-manage vegetable seedlings to ensure that families have home gardens to provide them with a reliable source of nutritious food.

This reduces pressure on the forest and protects the endangered mountain gorillas from exposure to zoonotic diseases and other illegal forest activities like poaching.

The leaders and adults who will protect Bwindi Impenetrable National Park’s endangered mountain gorillas in the future are in primary school right now. It is important to engage them early enough as stewards of their own environment.

CTPH spent the last 2 weeks training 450 pupils in 15 Bwindi frontline primary schools in Kanungu and Kisoro Districts and their teachers as One Health ambassadors in great apes zoonotic disease prevention in collaboration with The Kasiisi Project, with funding from the Arcus Foundation, and introduced recently developed One Health education clip charts and One Health themed snakes and ladders board games.

Learning sticks when it feels like play.

As we commemorate #WorldTourismDay, let's remember that tourism supports mountain gorillas conservation in ways many do not always see.

Around Bwindi and Mgahinga, tourism gives local people livelihoods, mostly in hospitality, which reduces their need to venture into the forest for food.

Revenue from gorilla permits, channeled by UWA, builds infrastructure in the communities and funds the ranger patrols keeping gorillas safe from poachers every day.

This World Tourism Day, remember that every visitor to Bwindi is part of the system holding gorilla conservation together.

Happy #WorldTourismDay!

Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust celebrates the opening of the Bwindi Gorilla Conservation Centre on World Gorilla Day!

The Bwindi Gorilla Conservation Centre showcases the work of three long-standing partners: Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust (VSPT), Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH), and Gorilla Doctors, and celebrates 25 years of Bwindi Lodge.

The story of Bwindi Lodge began in 1999, when Phenny Gongo, a ranger who habituated the gorillas for tourism, identified the site. A simple mobile camp was set up around where the Bwindi Gorilla Conservation Centre is today.

As a charter signatory to the 2005 UN Kinshasa Declaration on protecting great apes, Volcanoes Safaris' long-term commitment to gorilla conservation is central to its ethos and vision, and the Centre is a practical testament to it.

The Centre includes space for researchers, lodge guests, schoolchildren, and local people to learn about the work of Gorilla Doctors, CTPH, and VSPT. A further space at Bwindi Bar will focus on training for community members.

Thank you to our partners, friends and Volcanoes Safaris staff who joined us to celebrate the opening, and to everyone who helped bring the Centre to life.

Happy World Gorilla Day! 💚🦍

Gorilla trekking Film (Uganda) was created by our Interim Executive Director and WINGS Flag Carrier @allihanes and her team at @onehealthproductions in partnership with @ctph_uganda, @ugwildlife and @igcp_21. Conservation Through Public Health Uganda was created by WINGS Fellow, Dr. @gladyskalemazikusoka as a way to share her research and protect both humans and gorillas through the one health approach. This film was made to prepare tourists for their trekking experience and help prevent the spread of diseases to the gorillas.

You can watch the film @gorillatrekkingfilmuganda and read more about this One Health Productions project through the Linktree in our bio!

What does family planning have to do with protecting gorillas? 🦍

For our Global Partner Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH) in Uganda, the connections are clear.

Founder and CEO Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka says CTPH realized early on that protecting mountain gorillas also meant improving the health and well-being of the people living alongside them. Today, the organization brings conservation, community health, livelihoods, and voluntary family planning together through its Population, Health and Environment approach.

“When it’s good for the environment, then it’s good for the people. It’s a virtuous cycle.” — Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka

This #WorldGorillaDay, we celebrate CTPH and the communities showing what becomes possible when the health of people and the planet are addressed together. 🦍
