🦍🌍 WHEN THE HEALTH OF GORILLAS DEPENDS ON THE HEALTH OF PEOPLE 🌍🦍

This #WomanCrushWednesday, SWIS Africa celebrates Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka, a Ugandan veterinarian widely recognised as Uganda's first wildlife veterinarian. 🩺✨
Working with mountain gorillas, she saw what many had overlooked: wildlife and the communities living beside them share diseases, and they share solutions. That insight led her to found Conservation Through Public Health, built on a simple idea: protecting animals means protecting people too.

Her story is a reminder that the most powerful science connects disciplines instead of defending borders. 🌿
To every girl who loves animals, biology, and community health and wonders which one to choose: you may not have to choose. 💪🏾🌍

Dr. @gladyskalemazikusoka Uganda’s first wildlife veterinarian and a pioneer in conservation, is a remarkable woman whose dedication to protecting wildlife and uplifting local communities is truly inspiring. Her work extends far beyond gorillas, reflecting a deep understanding of the connection between people, animals, and nature. 🦍🌿

What a beautiful afternoon finally meeting you at your Gorilla Conservation Café in Entebbe! Sharing stories, experiences, and our mutual love for wildlife felt so natural and effortless. Hours passed without even noticing. 🤍

During my time deep in Uganda’s rainforest, monitoring chimpanzees and living disconnected from the outside world, her book, Walking with Gorillas, became one of the highlights of my days. Her story offered inspiration, valuable insights, and companionship during those quiet moments in the forest.

I returned from the rainforest with a different perspective on life, people, and the world around me. That experience changed something within me, and her story became a meaningful part of that journey. To finally meet the woman whose words had accompanied me through it all was a beautiful full-circle moment.

Through Conservation Through Public Health and Gorilla Conservation Coffee, Gladys continues to show that protecting wildlife also means empowering the communities that live alongside it.

I cannot recommend Walking with Gorillas enough, especially to the younger generation and anyone who dreams of making a difference.

Thank you, Gladys, for your warmth, wisdom, and such a wonderful afternoon. Your journey is a beautiful reminder that one person’s passion and compassion can inspire change far beyond what they ever imagined. 🌍🤍

Scimmia a chi? 🦍

I recently sat down with @tessilverman for a conversation that took me back to where it all began. I grew up with many pet dogs and cats at home, and hated seeing them suffering so I developed a deep liking and passion for a career taking care of animals, long before I knew I would become Uganda’s first wildlife veterinarian.

On the podcast, I shared something I have learned through every stage of life: There will always be a new challenge. There will always be people who doubt you. They can doubt you, but you must never doubt yourself. For a long time, I tried to please everyone along the way. With time and confidence, I learned you will never be able to please everybody. And if you try, you will not get where you need to go.

We spoke about what it takes to follow your calling when others doubt you, about gorilla conservation, about why I formed @ctph_uganda and later @gorillaconservationcoffeeuk and why protecting wildlife means protecting people - our One Health approach.

I hope my story reminds someone out there who is feeling doubted today, that your passion, when combined with purpose and perseverance, can truly make a difference for your community and for our planet.

When you care for people, they start to care for wildlife. This was one of the reflections I shared at the Djolifon Conference 2026, where I had the privilege of joining fellow panelists Dr. Hamza Hamouchene and DomiSanji, in a conversation moderated by @molemomoiloa, on “Resistance of the Commons: Rethinking, Reviving, and Reclaiming the Commons in the Age of Predatory and Extractive International Relations.”

Over the past 30 years of working with mountain gorillas, I have seen conservation becoming stronger when the communities living alongside wildlife are part of the solution.

At @ctph_uganda , we currently engage 630 #coffee farmers, including 230 women. Through initiatives such as @gorillaconservationcoffeeuk , we connect livelihoods with conservation and create opportunities for communities to benefit from protecting their environment.

Tourism can also play an important role. When visitors buy local crafts, hire community guides, support local businesses and contribute to community initiatives, they help ensure that conservation creates tangible benefits for the people living around protected areas.

Our #OneHealth approach through Village Health and Conservation Teams enables communities to take the lead. The people living in these villages understand their challenges best, and they should have a voice in developing the solutions.

The near doubling of mountain gorilla numbers over the decades is something we are incredibly proud to have contributed to, alongside local communities, the Government of Uganda, NGOs, researchers and the tourism sector.

The lesson for me is simple: we cannot protect nature without caring for the people who depend on it. The commons belong to all of us, and protecting them requires all of us to work together.

What an incredible week celebrating AFRICA: Earths Wild Home! Still overwhelmed after watching some of the incredible footage of #wildlife with heartwarming narration on the big screen recently at the Bafta Theater in London.

It was lovely to reconnect with my mentor #sylviaearle along with other @natgeo Explorers from Africa, who are also featured in the series, including @charlesemogor and @dominiquegoncalves. It was truly special to introduce @janemariefranklyn who filmed our work 30 years ago for @bbcone and National Geographic to Sara Hammond who filmed our work for this series which used historical footage from 1997! We were joined by @ctph_uganda Board Member Kevin James.

From scabies outbreaks threatening our mountain #gorillas, to seeing communities and gorillas thrive through improving their health to gorilla-friendly coffee where every bag gives back.

Huge thank you to @natgeotv and @rolex who made the series possible and support our work; and to award winning narrator and executive producer @wunmimosaku, Showrunner, BBC Studios Natural History Unit @gavinboyland,my fellow Rolex National Geographic Perpetual Planet Explorer, and our brilliant moderator @angellicabell

“They can doubt you, but you shouldn’t doubt yourself.”
—Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka @gladyskalemazikusoka

Have you ever stayed somewhere comfortable because you weren’t sure you could do the thing you really wanted?

This quote from Dr. Gladys brought me back to a decision of my own.

Dr. Gladys founded Conservation Through Public Health after recognizing that protecting gorillas also meant improving the health of the people living beside them.

Along the way, people questioned her work and offered opinions about how her organization should run. She listened, but she didn’t let every opinion pull her away from her mission.

I, too, have doubted my own decisions.

I had worked in advertising for years. It was comfortable, but it didn’t fill my soul. I wanted to pursue writing, but could I actually make a living at it?

My then-boyfriend encouraged me to leave because he could see how unhappy I was. He believed we would figure it out.

I still had fear and doubt. But I submitted my first article to a local newspaper in NYC, and I never looked back.

His belief in me helped me take that first step before I had all the answers.

Otherwise, I might still be in advertising, wondering what might have been.

What have you wanted to try but doubted yourself enough to put off?
