🌄 A bit about us:
We are 2 young ecologists/farmers hoping to shake up the agricultural system to be bountiful for nature and people.
We feel that producing a diversity of nutritional food and medicine in organic and biodynamic ways - and giving other folk access to this in our locality is the only true way to do this.
Although raising food in vegan and carbon negative ways can take more time and effort, compared to currently conventional methods of farming, it seems like the fair price to pay to be a decent tenant for the natural world that gifts us the resources to thrive. This effort is passed to you through the nutritional and flavourful quality of our produce.
We give our respects to those who came before us with our range of heritage/heirloom cultivars that we grow - and we save and share seed to reinforce the integrity of food and seed sovereignty. This also improves the ecological impact, resilience, nutrient and flavour profile, and bio-security of our produce - far past the shambolic efforts of conventional farming.
Our methods follow/are conscious to meticulous habitat/ecosystem structures, so they can support a plethora of species. Many nationally rare and vulnerable species can be found on site. We have found that trying to farm against the laws of ecology - that maintain the structure and health of our planet - is counterintuitive and self-destructive. We have healthy biodiversity/ecological interactions, so we do not use destructive and invasive artificial chemicals/equipment that impoverish the soil, persecute innocent animals and damage the health of consumers.
Just as our plants gather all of their energy from the Sun - so do we! We are 100% solar powered. We also use classic, analogue equipment as much as possible (around 98% of the time) and fully compostable material at every opportunity.
We continue to contribute to nature/habitat restoration projects at our collective rural community at Berwick Woodland - reviving wetlands (re-meandering ditches/burns, pond sequences, etc.), expanding native forests, diversifying meadows. Hopefully we can form a place that supports and revives truly local, sustainable rural economies and people/culture! by @cuairtcrops

We have recently partnered with our friends at FoodLink (a new Aberdeenshire start-up for localised, diversified & nature/people-friendly food production) to get our produce on the Open Food Network site & make it accessible to all of you! 🥳🌿

We joined them in an attempt to make shopping sustainably accessible, to get our foods out to the people of Aberdeenshire, and to communally work alongside/support other small-scale producers who are trying to improve the food system, relationships with the land & the wider environment. 🧑‍🌾

You can buy from us “wholesale” as an organisation, or buy “retail” as an individual customer. 🚚🛍️

We harvest fresh every Tuesday morning after collecting the week’s orders placed in advance. The wonderful FoodLink team then deliver your goodies so they are with you that same day every week. (If Tuesdays don’t work for you, please message us so we can work something out with you directly).

So, what are you waiting for?! Go get shopping! 🧺

Spirality and cyclicality have huge influences on the actions we take and patterns we create here at Cuairt Crops.

Our name - Cúairt - comes from the Gaelic word for cycle or circuit. We chose this name with the hope of honouring the ancestry of this land, upholding the beautiful language of it & to represent the ceaselessly unfailing manner in which life works.

We aim to work within these cycles (Nature, soil, water, food, Moon, Earth, Sun, life and death) and enhance what this patch of Earth has to offer - for flora, fauna, diversity, community, sovereignty, security, sustainability, sustenance, resistance, revolution and hope.

All actions taken and decisions made on site aim to be entirely closed-circuit, meaning we utilise and work WITH Nature and all of her cycles to create a system that finds ways to repurpose, reuse and recycle all within it.

This happens to be so much easier on the land, cheaper, kinder, safer, gentler, and reliable than many other methods or “standard practices” that are utilised in modern day agriculture. Many of which cause overwhelms of waste, pollution, harm, environmental degradation & exploitation.

Or method may take a wee bit more effort and care - but isn’t this planet worth it?!

Our Salad bags back in @refillosophy.abdn this weekend!!

A huge range of leaves with a big fusion of flavours (nutty, citrus, earthy, spicy, sweet) in them, with medicinal wild foraged native herbs (like Yarrow, Sorrel and Plantain) and sweet and nutty edible flowers too.

All in fully compostable grab bags (made in the UK, from wood pulp). 🌲

Hoping these can bring a bit of sunshine and spring spirit to everyone! 🥗🍃🌞🌼

It felt like felling a forest this morning. 🌳

Tall, proud and bushy Celery off to be made into amazing things at @groundedaberdeen today.

They’ve come a long way: building themselves up over winter, and the flooding that we had where they are - but they’ve turned out beautiful and healthy from it; with a strong flavour and rich dark tone to them. Should be packed full of the good stuff because of it.

‘S fhada bho nach fhaca mi thu!

The land is waking back up and so are we 🌅🌱

Our Spring Salad Mix has formed a glorious bunch of colours and flavours this year - deep purples, lime greens and wine red Albarossa leaves 🌹; with a kind of mellow floral, peppery, garlicy, citrusy fusion o flavours. See what ye think yourself!

It found it’s first place of the year with the wonderful @tarmachan_cafe near Balmoral today.
A bit of a pilgrimage for me & Rachael too, with one of our first jobs together being along in this part of Deeside - and where we first met Ceilidh: our rescued Collie.

We hope this mix can be a solid quick support for any plate of grub - with it packing a grand amount of vits and mins too and a good sprinkling of medicinal wild foraged herbs like Yarrow & Sorrel, and Rocket & Kale flowers.
Hopefully something to reduce some of the societal salad slander!
Many more things to come soon 👨🏻‍🌾👩🏻‍🌾🐕🌀

With the season trying to open up but those heavy rain clouds never breaking and the covid hitting - it’s felt a bit like the wheels are spinning in heavy mud; whilst the Cailleach refuses to rest. 🌬️

We’re hoping to see more consistency this next year.
It’s been a bit volatile with long heat and then long cold windy wetness. They’ve been good conditions for the shrooms though: we’ve been finding so many different species in the fields, like the puffball in the 3rd slide. Maybe we should be growing mushrooms.

We are getting there though: late Garlic has just joined others in the ground, the Apple and Damsons have had a trim up, and the exotic polytunnel-dwellers are sown. 🍆🍅🌶️

Mind the remnant pea frame from last year in the background…
Much more to come this week!

🌳⚒️ Part of this winter has been reviving the native woodland.

Getting the supports in and solid for the trees is so important - especially with the raging winds that never seem to fully rest these days.

With several different species going in the ground in the next couple weeks: it’ll do wonders for our already extremely fortunate biodiversity around the land we are even luckier to be a part of.

Excited to get back to growing at the start of the true new year at Imbolc (February 1st)!
