Three years ago I legit ended up buying some from CANADA! Yes - that country literally across the other side of the world 🤪
.
For a country like NZ with our skin cancer stats and that olde hole in the ozone layer you’d think we’d be *swimming* in cool options for SunSmart swimwear for our precious kiddos, but - nope 🤦‍♀️
.
And so Cucumber Cool was born - totally selfishly lolz but also because I KNEW there would be other parents like me out there who just knew there had to be an easier and more effective way to keep their kids safe in the sun!

This is definitely not meant to be some Freddy Krueger fear mongering buuuuut I just wanted to share my experience as one of the many Kiwi and Aussie millennials who are dealing with the repercussions of our bikinis from the age of 2, blisters on the shoulders, permanent sunburned nose childhood!

We started Cucumber Cool so our generation of parents can help keep kids safe from the harsh UV rays of summer without stress and without compromising on style 😝

👋 IT’S SO COOL TO MEET YOU! 👋

Okay first things first - are you up for getting to know our crazy crew?! We’re A LOT 😝
.
I’m sure you can imagine the mayhem and madness of a 4x boy household so if you’re game - let’s go!
.
The least crazy of the crew (we think anyway) are Mum & Dad - Marnie & Steve 👋 (though they did think it was a great idea to have 4 kids, start 2 businesses & have dreams and schemes of taking their kids around the world so maaaaybe they’re loopier than they think 🤔🤪). Marnie has always been hard core about the kid’s sun safety as she had her first skin cancer removed at age 23 and another basal cell carcinoma cut out from the inside of her eye last year 🫣
.
Then we’ve got the boys 🙌
👩🏽‍🦱 River is the big bro - a chiller at heart but gets pulled into the chaos by the rest of the bros. He could listen to his audiobook collection for “literally days” if he could & his favourite thing to do is “anything with my friends”
🧒🏽 Mackie Moo is our crazy/amazing #2 son - he turns 8 in a few days & has 58 Lego sets on his bday wish list! He’s a bit of a maths whizz (actually an all round whizz) and has MEAN moves on the skim board!
🧑🏼The Moby Man - Blue-eyed and sweet as honey 🍯 he just had his very first big-boy hair cut (🥹🥹🥹) and basically looks like a teenager now. If he could he’d live in his imagination 24/7 & has the most delicious half moon eyes when he smiles (which is alllll the time)
👶🏽 Baby Raff - buckle up world, Rafferty Rex is here! This kid was basically born walking and talking & running the show 🤪 we’d call him a terror except that he’s somehow an absolute delight - even when he’s up to total mischief. He’s mastered a worrying good evil laugh & his fave thing is being with his bros & food (both eating it and throwing it 🫠)
.
We are incredibly lucky to live at NZ’s BEST beach - Waipu Cove. And when I say we love there - I mean we are literally there 3 times a day 75% of the year 😝
.
Cucumber Cool was born at the beginning of 2025 after finding it mind-boggling that we couldn’t get full coverage swimwear for our boys here in NZ 😵‍💫 in true Kiwi DIY mentality we took it upon ourselves to make this a reality! by @cucumbercool_

I literally have no shame turning up to a new town and being an ABSOLUTE walking cliché of a wannabe outdoorsy gal 🚲⛰️🥾🏕️
.
My 30s were all about the chill life, beachy vibe and I went all in on that too - but YO there is a new Marnie and her 40s is gonna be wearing barefoots and hiking peaks 😂

Books are BACK in our house and I am so stoked to see the bigger boys nose deep in their new fave series’ - so I thought i would share the books that have rekindled their reading habits 🙌 📖 💕
.
For my 8 year-old it was a huge win to get a FULL set of Diary of a Wimpy Kid off TradeMe 🙌 he is literally devouring them & it’s sparked off a general keenness to read actual books again after being solely obsessed with audiobooks for the last year. All the books he’s been into have some sort of illustrations so that’s a good incentive to have the paper copy!
.
For my eldest (who turns 11 this week!! 🥹🥹) it was actually us reading the Hunger Games Trilogy together that relit his fire for books ❤️‍🔥 I think for a while he was in this no man’s land where he was feeling uninspired but “kid books” but hadn’t discovered the next step up
.
So now we’re all about dystopian worlds and teenage hero quests 🙌 we just got him the Maze Runner series for his bday too. Awesome thing is lots of these series have movies that go with them too which is cool to watch after reading the books (I’m a stickler for books first 😂)
.
With both boys it’s been a mix of going back to reading TO them, and setting up their own reading time that’s been a winning combo. And Steve and I had forgotten how delicious it is to curl up with them and read books together 🥰 especially when it also means reliving my own childhood faves or getting to indulge in some teen fiction again 😝
.
We’ve also started turning their audiobooks off 30 mins before bedtime so they get time to do their own reading before sleep 💤
.

Guyzzzz we had the bloody best time doing a beach photoshoot today for our full coverage kids swimsuits and dayyyum did Papamoa turn it on for us ☀️ 🙌
.
The kids all had such a blast too (THANK GOD 😮‍💨) and it went as smoothly as you can imagine 10 kiddos charging around on a beach could 😝
.

It’s that time of year again 🤪
