I'm excited and grateful to officially be a part of the Edna Lewis legacy as a 2021-22 @ednalewisfoundation (culinary) Scholar!

This award will not only help relieve some financial burdens as I finish my graduate education at @freemanschool but it will help me continue developing the necessary tools, relationships, knowledge, and exposure within the industry. Eight years ago I set my sights on creating my own path and lane in NYC's food scene. Since then, I've been blessed with unconventional opportunities as incremental steps to fulfilling my dreams of being a dope culinarian.

I'm grateful and excited. It also feels pretty damn awesome to be recognized by my peers/colleagues that I admire. Thanks to @mashamabailey and the Edna Board for recognizing me. I'm eager to dig in some dirt with @chefarmermatthew thanks to his willingness to teach me the ways of the land. Thanks to @elle_simone_scott for her constant support as I navigate this terrain and momentous gratitude to my jBae @mistermcqueen for continuously pushing me to take new steps.

Feel free to visit the site to learn more and read up on the other recepients!

Today, and for the rest of this Black History Month/My Birthday Month I will open up purchases for my recipe book. This is to celebrate another year of life, my love for my mother, my love for all things food, and for just being the dope person that the ancestors have created me to be!

PURCHASE LINK BELOW AND IN PROFILE!!!

Yesterday I celebrated a new age! Grateful to see another birthday even in the midst of a Pandemic.

Yesterday I celebrated the beginning of Black History Month by staying true to my Black identity that I was born into back in 1990 with my Black family and Black upbringing in the Black South Side of Chicago!

Yesterday I reflected on old memories, love, my late Mother who gave birth to me, and passions that have brought me thus far and led me to eventually create "Hungry N' Homesick"

My dearest Elle. Thank YOU! I found myself replaying your voice note you sent me back in October as I grappled with the news earlier today. The love, warmth, and strength in your voice were pleasing to my soul. I am SO blessed to have been within your aura since the day we met (in this photo) over a decade ago in Harlem!

Since then, you've nurtured, loved, inspired, and guided myself amongst many others. My heart aches in grief knowing your physical presence has ended, but I jump for joy knowing your spirit is more than palpable while here on this earthly plane will be even brighter with the ancestors. Thank you God for bingring great people like Elle into my life.

Thank you for being a part of my culinary journey while also being a magnificent friend and mentor! I will cherish every memory of us. Keep a close watch dear, Chef.

Asé and Amen!

I decided to share a little from my book, Hungry N' Homesick, for the holidays! Granted, I don't have recipes tailored for the holiday meals, but these two can surely be used as inspo.

I am NOT cooking this Thanksgiving but if you're in a last minute bind and/or doing something small and intimate feel free to whip up the Ice Box Pie or use the ingredients in the Cornish Hen for your turkey, chicken, or hens yourself.

Simple, approachable, flavorful, and familiar is the way to go.

I have the esteemed pleasure of returning back to Etsy HQ courtesy of @pixiescoutnyc and the Etsy staff as a guest Chef. #lifeatetsy

There is no need to say more in a caption. Watch the vid of Chef Dong & I to experience what I have cooking up for their lunch canteen.

Major gratitude to @chefnaomisantos_ for bringing me into the fold many years ago. Couldn't have done it without your introductory support back then!

Grateful for life's alignment! Yep...I still cook!!! "Cliffy STILL be cooking" 😉 by @culinary_cliff

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I must say this year I am TRULY grateful for God's bounty!

In late 2023, I was once again laid off from another job. However, in spring of 2024, as I continued searching for my next opportunity, I decided to no longer waddle in frustration and grief -- instead, I poured into something else... my garden.

For the first time ever, I decided to grow a vegetable garden. I have many fond memories of playing in my next-door neighbor/babysitter's garden as a kid, but never have I tried to do one on my own. Let's just say I'm so glad I did it because not only did it provide me with nutritious ingredients for my culinary crEATtions it also allowed me to create a new hobby, center myself, and alleviate outside stressors.

This hobby ended up being more than just a garden. It was a lesson. A lesson on faith...watering seeds...focusing on watering your own seeds and not others(let that seep in), letting things go in order to reap more, and truly grasping the concept of knowing EVERYTHING has a season!

Nevertheless, I can officially say I have a green thumb! I made sure to:

1- grow foods of the diaspora

2 - use Black farmers/seed co-ops

3 - have fun!!!!! We get so wrapped up in doing things for financial gain or validation. It was refreshing to do something just to have fun

Of course, not everything I grew did well. Pests ate up my greens, climate change, and mother nature wreaked havoc on temperature sensitive herbs, and some things just didn't come to fruition, BUT that's okay because what did come was plenty!

Some of the things I grew:

- Plate de Haiti Tomatos

- Mississippi Silver Hull Peas

- St. Kitts Sorrell

- Cilantro

- Mirhani Basil

- Ethiopian Mustard Greens

- Purple Collard Greens

- Kale

- Fennel

- Spotlight Bell Peppers

- Chili Peppers

- Old Black Man's Okra

- Callaloo/Green Amaranth

- Freedom Lettuce

- Arugula

- Chives

- Scallions

I had a lot of fun this season making meals with what I harvested. Garden to gut is a real thing lol. This was without a doubt a gift that keeps on giving! I look forward to next year. Asé!

P.S. yes my pooch, Syrah, was my garden boss some days! by @culinary_cliff

As many of you know, my partner Cliff is an incredible chef. Over the summer he had his second residency at @etsy headquarters in Brooklyn, where he fed the staff dishes inspired by his years of living in Chicago, Atlanta and New York. Cliff ALWAYS shows up for and supports me so of course I was gonna make time to go support him and have a yummy meal. 💜😋 Wanna experience some of his tasty dishes in your own home? Click on the second link in my bio to purchase his cookbook “Hungry N’ Homesick”. It’s currently available online as a hardback but if you’re interested in a digital copy, reach out to him directly.
