JM: Whew chile! Finding the perfect location to film this forth installment of “WILD” was literally WILD! We were originally supposed film at Little Island @littleislandnyc , but after months of planning —those plans suddenly fell through with very little time to regroup. I was forced to practice many of the words I often share with my students and mentees including; “you can’t force a round peg into a square hole”, and that “It’s important to hold fast to your overall vision for your work but remain flexible with the methods used to achieve your goal. Your first idea of how you will achieve your goal isn’t always your best”. I can certainly say this all was the case with Little Island. But things ALWAYS work out the way they’re supposed to (not how you want them to), if you’re willing to dig deep and do the work. On the 4th of July, while feeling caught between a rock and a hard place, my partner and I hopped in the car to go scouting for a new location, traveling north of NYC to a beautiful park in Yonkers, NY called Untermyer Park & Garden @untermyergardens . I had once visited the hidden gem many years prior. A historic 43-acre city public park, tucked away on the top of a mountain in Westchester County, the park & garden features sweeping views of the Hudson River and New Jersey. This garden oasis was perfect and far better than my original idea (and I oop!). However, securing a permit to film here during the pandemic was a challenge in itself. Not to mention, we had the rainiest summer ever, with numerous cancelled and rescheduled shoot dates. We finally shot the bulk of the film on what felt like the hottest day of the entire summer. BUT WE GOT IT DONE! Huge shoutout to my incredibly loving and supporting partner, Cliff who is always down to help with whatever task I toss at him, including being a dancing stand-in so I can further explore my visions (swipe through to see what I’m talking about). 💜💫 Head to blackirisproject.org/wild (or the link in our bio) to stream “WILD: Bird of Paradise” through December 31st. #BIPwildthangz #blackirisproject #untermyergarden #newyork #oasis #park #garden #nature

“I am in the industry because I love food! I love food more than people and the way I connect to people is thru food. And this industry allows me to explore that from all angles. From cooking...to managing a food business...to even publishing my own book. Some things that should change is the lack of equitable pay and how we overwork ourselves to feed people but forget to feed ourselves..literal and figurative. The burnout in the industry is getting old. We can do better and there are systems for it but the archaic thought process is slowing us down.”- @culinary_cliff (Also go to his website in his profile to check out his book “Hungry N’ Homesick”)

Happy mail for this happy Friday! I’m so excited to share these 2 things with you! I was super surprised when I pulled out this Phenomenally Black Owned t-shirt from @phenomenal. Y’all know I love a good t-shirt with a good message and I am 100% here for this one. You can get one in their Black collection. Now. This book. Y’all. I don’t even know if I can put the words together. I have been friends with @culinary_cliff since our #Spelhouse days and I have seen the MASTERPIECES he has created in the kitchen. So when he told me he was releasing his first book, despite the fact that I actively avoid cooking, I knew I HAD to get a copy. Because if I’m ever going to cook, it’s gonna be one of these recipes. Plus it’s in tribute to his mother and shares precious family memories. This is a piece of his heart and it is simply beautiful. Plus this house spice mix smells incredible. This is the cookbook you want. Period. He’ll be selling it for the rest of the month, so check out his profile and get yours now. #blackgirlbuying #buyblack #blackowned #blackownedbusiness #supportblackbusiness #blackswhoblog #blackbloggers #blackgirlswhoblog #blackgirlsblog #blackgirlblogger #phenomenallyblackowned #consistency2021

A few weeks ago we had another successful bubble residency with a previous VAP resident, @blackirisproject & choreographer @mistermcqueen. To stay as safe as possible during the ongoing pandemic, we weren't there to capture moments in the studio and we didn't have a community presentation, but we are so excited to see what they worked on grow and hopefully be presented in the near future!
