A little reminder about the person behind Culinary Breeding Network 👋

I’m Lane Selman, a Professor of Practice at Oregon State University and the founder of the Culinary Breeding Network.

I grew up on the Space Coast of Florida, where my childhood was spent with my extensive Sicilian family on our citrus farm and in the packinghouse, and in the garden and kitchen with my nonna, Giuseppina Crisafulli.

I grew up so connected to land, food, and culture that I didn’t even realize at the time that my experience was different from anyone else’s. It shaped the way I think about food in ways I only came to understand much later.

I started Culinary Breeding Network in 2011 to bring plant breeders, farmers, chefs, bakers, makers, and eaters together around the work of creating and celebrating more delicious and diverse food. What began as a way to get chefs and breeders talking to one another has grown into a much bigger community built around collaboration, biodiversity, curiosity, and a shared love of really good food.

And this fall, another piece of that work is heading out into the world: “Radicchio: A Celebration of the Beloved Italian Vegetable”, my new book with coauthor @margarett_maria and photographer @shawnlinehan , coming September 29 from @timberpress . It’s a celebration of radicchio, of course, but also of the farmers, breeders, cooks, culture, and community that have made this vegetable such an important part of my life and work.

I’m also very excited to be a new Food & Culture Board Member for the Anna Tasca Lanza Foundation, the governing nonprofit organization behind @cook.the.farm whose work around food, agriculture, culture, and place feels deeply connected to so much of what I care about.

Culinary Breeding Network may look like a lot of fun events, tastings, field days, vegetables, grains, beans, and very full tables… but behind it all is a mission to connect, educate, and build a more diverse and flavorful food system for everyone.

Thanks for being part of it. ❤️

After more than 15 years of radicchio obsession, I’m so excited to finally share this…

On September 29, you’ll be able to hold the new book “Radicchio: A Celebration of the Beloved Italian Vegetable” in your hands.

My obsession with this remarkable Italian vegetable began more than 15 years ago. Since then, I’ve been down a joyful rabbit hole of learning — traveling to Italy; meeting deeply chicory-informed farmers (🙏🏽 @myrthazierock ), breeders (🙏🏽 @smarties.bio ), chefs, and historians; roaming through radicchio fields in the US and Italy; eating countless meals centered around the bitter (and it is better!) greens; and organizing radicchio celebrations and learning expeditions.

Along the way, an incredible community of passionate farmers, breeders, chefs, and radicchio lovers — in the Pacific Northwest and in Italy — has helped bring this vegetable into the spotlight.

This book grew out of that community. 💜

Coauthored by Lane Selman and Margarett Waterbury (@margarett_maria ) with beautiful photography by Shawn Linehan (@shawnlinehan ) the book explores radicchio history, culture, botany, growing, and cooking, and includes recipes and stories from chefs, farmers, and grandmothers in Italy and the United States — showing just how delicious and versatile this vegetable can be.

It’s the first in-depth book dedicated entirely to radicchio, and I truly hope it inspires more people to grow it, cook it, and eat it, and fall in love with it the way I have.

Stayed tuned for more details and sneak peeks in the coming weeks and months :)

Many thanks to publisher @timberpress , editor @makenna_good , agent @theosheaagency , co-author Margarett, photographer Shawn, recipe tester @emilyrpark and the entire chicory community for making this book possible. by @culinarybreedingnetwork

Well, now you can hear him TALK about beans & also TASTE beans he made if you come to the Sagra del Radicchio e Fagioli on October 24th! It’s a festival for beans! (& radicchio, which Jim also loves, but let’s be real, it’ll always be the beans for him). 🫘🎉🤓💛 by @culinarybreedingnetwork

@marionnestle traveled from her home in New York to be present in Portland to share her new book Sugar Coated, co-authored by Lisa Sutherland at @vivienneculinarybooks tonight.

@culinarybreedingnetwork had the honor of hosting a q&a before a signing, which Nestle handled with a preternatural ease I’ve rarely witnessed in a setting like this. The author responded to every one of Lane’s questions fulsome and playfully, as if she was alternating between reading from her book and carrying on a stand up comedy skit. Academic books like Food Politics, Sugar Coated or What To Eat are chock full of facts. Nestle was able to parry them around tonight like her photographic memory had a Leica lens.

The only thing more impressive than her legacy as a scientist and food writer (Nestle began her career-check out her Wikipedia page 🤯- in nutrition in 1975 as a college professor at Brandeis University) for me was Nestle herself. At 90 years young, she effortlessly held the room with grace, levity and good cheer after 10 pm EST on a national tour for her 18th book.

What an inspiration… thanks for hosting this for us Robin ✨ taken in Vivienne Culinary Books by @culinarybreedingnetwork

Among Cookbookery readers, Radicchio may be the hottest cookbook of the season. I talked to Lane Selman, the founder of @culinarybreedingnetwork and the book’s co-author with @margarett_maria, about how this unique book came to be. Authors mentioned include @katieparla and @emikodavies. Read the full interview at the link in my bio and then go eat some radicchio!

Vegetables have stories to tell.

This Sunday, food journalist Ali Francis joins us at Vivienne to celebrate The Curious Lives of Vegetables, her beautifully illustrated journey through more than 125 vegetables from around the world.

From the familiar to the strange, Ali traces the people, places, histories, and cultures that have shaped what we grow and eat—and reveals just how much is hiding behind the vegetables on our plates.

Joining Ali in conversation is Lane Selman, founder of Portland’s Culinary Breeding Network, for an evening about plants, people, agriculture, and the stories that connect them.

Please join us for the inaugural Field Notes Symposium. 💚

In 2011, a small group of farmers, chefs and an OSU plant breeder sat down together for a pepper tasting.

I simply wanted the people who breed crops, grow them and cook with them to be in the same room - tasting the same thing and sharing their thoughts.

That afternoon, I had an “aha!” moment and gave whatever this was becoming a name: Culinary Breeding Network.

I had absolutely no idea what I was starting.

Fifteen years, countless tastings, projects and events later, I’m still amazed that one pepper tasting turned into all of this.

The Variety Showcase and Sagra del Radicchio move fast: one bite, then on to the next table. I love that energy, but it means we rarely get enough time to hear the stories and knowledge behind the people and projects.

Field Notes Symposium, October 23 at The Redd, in collaboration with @osu_foodinnovationcenter, is the answer to that.

One full day with the people whose work, ideas and friendships have shaped CBN.

Field Notes is that day.

Some people write about the food system. Marion Nestle helped change the way we think about it.

For decades, Marion Nestle has been one of the most influential voices in American food politics, asking difficult questions about who shapes what we eat, how food is marketed to us, and where public health and corporate interests collide.

Her landmark book Food Politics, first published in 2002, helped bring those questions into the wider conversation and won a James Beard Literary Award. Since then, through her teaching, research, advocacy, and many books, Marion has continued to challenge us to look more closely at the forces behind our everyday food choices.

Her newest book, Sugar Coated, written with Lisa Sutherland, turns that attention to one of the most familiar objects in the American kitchen: the cereal box.

We’re especially excited to bring Marion together with Lane Selman, founder of Portland’s Culinary Breeding Network and an advocate for a more diverse, resilient, and connected food system.

Join us for a rare evening with Marion Nestle and Lane Selman at Vivienne.
