This dinner has been a long time in the making, we’ve always loved our chicories at Cafe Olli. These bitter greens are always so vibrant and crisp in the dark winter months. Some favorite snap shots from the past 5+ years at the Cafe and visiting our farmers.

We’re so excited to highlight this beautiful Radicchio Cookbook and put a little Olli spin on it. It’s a pretty unique experience to be able to meet the author, farmers, chefs, and share a meal with your friends 💞

💖 HAPPY CHICORY WEEK 💖 Ohhhh baby. What’s better than radicchio wrapped up with a warm buttery blanket of flaky pastry crust compiled by the best in the business at Coville Street Patisserie @colvillestreet ? Not much, I’d say. Maybe paired with a hot chai in the morning sun through those big windows.

Reminds me of the story my friend Zoë likes to tell when she first met her husband “I need you to know, I have someone else in my life...butter is my boyfriend.” I would add: And radicchio is my lover.

Hayshaker Radicchio croissant!
Feta, almonds, capers, apple, green onion, and sauteed radicchio. Little mustard and honey in the marinade. Pretty tasty!

💖 HAPPY CHICORY WEEK 💖 Local radicchio is in the house at @andysmarket_wa ! Find Hayshaker bitter greens, along with green curly kale, lacinato kale, fioretto cauliflower, and new this weekend, our signature chicory mix by the bag. Next week we’ll be stocking badger flame gold beets and celeriac too! It’s been great to work with Ed, and now Sam, in the produce department to help bring more local vegetables to the grocery world, and a convenient place to buy Hayshaker produce outside of the food hub and farmer’s market. Aside from our certified organic produce, find lots of other local goods, from apples to squash, tomatoes to mushrooms. Thanks to Andy’s Market for stocking the local goods.

The programs are printed and the menus are ready to go!After months of planning, our first Field Notes Symposium opens its doors tomorrow, Friday, October 23 at The Redd on Salmon.

🍱 SCHOOL LUNCH by @ikoinokai featuring @umiorganic noodles: yakisoba, grilled shio-koji tofu and lemon shio-koji chicken, ume onigiri, and a salad of radicchio, delicata squash, apples, and pears.

🧡 FAMILY STYLE DINNER by @tournantpdx : bounty boards, bread from @littletbaker , a riff on Lane’s favorite way she actually eats radicchio the most (that didn’t make it into her book!), cedar plank sablefish, various ferments from @jordyn___b from @osu_foodinnovationcenter , charred cabbages with pink beans, toasted @camascountrymill farro salad, and @pinologelato goat cheese gelato with Mild Thing pepper jam & candied sage leaves to close out the night.

Events like this don’t happen without a lot of people saying yes. Thank you to everyone who made this happen.

@chicoryweek and @localrootsfarm (@jasonsalvo and @farmersiri) put on an over the top radicchio themed dinner this past Monday in Seattle at @railspur.seattle! It was a full circle experience to be in Seattle celebrating radicchio like during the first ever Sagra del Radicchio in 2018. A beautiful venue, an extremely special dinner by @thecorsonbuilding, @thetiderun and @rainshadowmeats , a caring and celebratory community of radicchio lovers, it was a night to remember! Thanks to all of you who made it possible!

Ever since I walked into Brasserie Four with bright eyes and a case of radicchio 12 years ago, Hannah has been locked in with support of our farm and all the varieties of produce we grow. Not to mention her dedication to all other local farms (Tailfeather, Welcome Table and more). 💖 HAPPY CHICORY WEEK 💖 Radicchio and power to the people! We love our partnership with Blue Mountain Action Council (@bmacww), the local food pantry warehouse. Money from WA state Farm to Food Pantry and other programs are directly paying farmers like us to feed the people with healthy, fresh produce. This week, the stellar team at BMAC brought in some various radicchio for the Walla Walla food banks, along with some leeks, collards and potatoes. Then a few days later, the BMAC glean team came out to harvest some end of season peppers. We love that our food is getting into the kitchens of all our neighbors, so big thanks to folks who support and donate to these programs, and to the hardworking team at BMAC supporting our community.

Not only do I write cookbooks, but there was once a time when I also *sold* them for a living at @booklarder! So I thought how fun it would be to start a series that takes me back behind the counter for a minute 📚

I get sent a lot of cookbooks each season, and these are six of the new fall releases I’d recommend in a heartbeat—from Eastern European comfort food and Georgian cooking to tea rituals, chicories, Jewish sweets, and festive baking.

Book Breakfast: October 31st 10am-12pm
Join us over pastry, coffee and records for a mellow morning celebration of Radicchio: A Celebration of the Beloved Italian Vegetable. This in-depth book conceived by Lane Selman of the Culinary Breeding Network is equal parts Italian culture, history, food and recipes. The menu will consist of gelato, coffee and tea drinks, pastries from Sebastiano’s, brioche con gelato and more! We’ll be sampling radicchio gelato that didn’t make it into the book! The recipe comes from Jacopo Braggion, 3rd generation Gelateria da Bepi in Padua.

Lane will be hosting, signing books and doing what she does best - being the hub of community and conversation on all things food and agriculture. Signed books will be available to purchase.

I wrapped the book tour on Wednesday and am slowly figuring out how to be a person again. (Read: I’ve been cooking meals for myself and sleeping until 9:37 every morning.)

It is completely exhilarating, soul warming, and grounding to have met hundreds of people around the country who all believe in the throughline of this book: an ecologically, ideologically, and culturally diverse world is not only more beautiful but also more resilient. There are more of us than you’d think. 🩷

Endless gratitude to the bookstores, conversation partners, vegetable lovers, and my sweet husband who turned up for me and for these strange plants! I might never get over this?
