Shalaya was a great friend, and even better person if that’s even possible! 😇 You know those people that want the best for you with no strings attached…the people that warm your spirit with their smile, their laughter, or merely their presence…that was Shalaya. She/they did that well. As soon as we met, it felt like I gained another big sister, and I was immediately her lil bro. Shalaya loved basketball, I loved basketball…I feel like we could have even passed as siblings. I think that closeness is how she made a lot people feel. Her loss of life, is a big loss to the Native American community, the basketball community, the LBGTQ community of Portland and far beyond. She/they will truly be missed! ♥️ If you’re able to attend their CELEBRATION of LIFE this Saturday, see the flyer for information! ➡️ #rip #native #community #portland #umatilla by @culturalblends

You ever had one of those random conversations with a stranger that lasted an hour?! You know, one of those super deep human connection type talks that made you feel like you knew this person your whole life. As we get older and move further into the 21st century, these serendipitous moments don’t seem to happen nearly as much as they once did the immediate generations before. It’s understandable; Life is so different now than, say, 50 years ago. Meet @livnmomagiccc she spotted me sitting at the bus stop outside of the shop, a usual spot to catch some rays outside of @backtothebasketdotcom To give you the Cliff Notes, her name is Moana…she’s from O’ahu…I told her about my my son and how he loves Moana the movie, my years on the Big Island, we joked and busted out the dormant pidgin. I let her moke out little bit, I just tried to chime in talk about Hawai’i things to instigate. She went to Punahou with Obama…she was a Senior when he was a Sophomore. I could write a couple pages of transcript about her D1 Volleyball days, entrepreneurship, art, and all the other life things we discussed but that would be beside the point of making this post in the first place. You know how elderly people often say, “Slow down and smell the roses.” Same philosophy applied here. Take time to speak to people. People (a lot in Portland) are becoming afraid to talk to one another. You know the vibe. You might be eating at a restaurant, and a couple gets seated right next to you. Do you put the invisible blinders up or do you say, “Hello,” and acknowledge they’re 3ft away from you. I hardly edit these types of posts. Sort of just edit the sentence I’m on and let the thumbs do the rippin’ and runnin’. My point in this is just a gentle reminder that there is so much beauty and things to learn in the form of dialogue. Strike up a conversation with a stranger. If you have a story like this to share, post it in the comments ✍🏽 Oh yeah, I forgot. After all that talking we did at the bus stop, Auntie said Eh frick this your shop ah?! Lemme check it out. She picked up this hat and said… (continued ⬇️) #sᴛᴏʀʏᴛɪᴍᴇ #culturalblends #share #community #portland #pdx #conversationstarters by @culturalblends
Dame has played a significant role in my entrepreneurial journey! I’ll forever be grateful for him for that. From the early days selling straight outta the garage on SE 82nd (iykyk) to his 0.9 buzzer beater shot against Houston and selling out of hundreds of hats online and hundreds more before halftime of Game 4. He single handedly changed the course of my life, and really helped collectively put Portland “On the map.” 📍 The love for the game of basketball has always been there for me, but turning it into a business is something I never truly foresaw, and again Dame can be thanked for playing a pivotal part in that. You can experience this today and every single day of the week at @backtothebasketdotcom the latest extension of CB (coming up on 5 years 😳) that is dedicated to the history and love for the game. It’s filled with hoops nostalgia, good energy, and great people. If you were to ask me what Cultural Blends is today, I’d say it’s really a feeling as much as it anything else. Especially these days, and if you’ve ever walked into Back to the Basket, or even the Lloyd Center store when it was open, you know the feeling. It’s hard to put into words but it’s real. If you have a good memory about Dame in Portland or CB, feel free to drop it in the comments. Would love to reminisce with y’all! ✌🏽 #portland #community #lillard #ripcity #goblazers by @culturalblends
I met Jeff a decade ago, or maybe even longer. It was at a “Last Thursday” on Alberta back in 2014 or 2015. During that summer I was selling “The Best Coast” tees and stickers like cold water in the desert. I don’t remember exactly what he said, but he was a fast-talking OG Asian Cat from the Bay Area. I remember his energy. He saw one of the shirts hanging up, and he was like, “Brooo what is this?!” He said it in a way where you knew it resonated with him so I gave him the background of the business, the name, and ultimately the concept and design process behind the license plate shirt. In a nutshell, I described how I felt that Oregon and Washington were often left out of the conversation, or even forgotten about when people would talk about the West Coast. I told him that this was my attempt to unite the West Coast, from the perspective of a NW person, or even furthermore, a Portland perspective on the West Coast. Throughout the years, Jeff has always been a supporter of @culturalblends and would buy a bunch of stickers at wholesale and give them out to people he connected with at his @mamachowskitchen food cart when it was located on SW 1st & Oak. Recently he told me when I originally met him, he had just moved here from the Bay and was seeking community. I didn’t know this prior, but he told me I played a significant role in welcoming him to Portland and helping him find community and a good-footing here in the city. Fast forward to this winter, Jeff and his team at @mamachowskitchen had been closed for months because of an accident and injury he sustained while hiking the gorge. Good news is that he’s back, healthy and the food cart is OPEN in a new location on 37th & SE Hawthorne Blvd. Just a few blocks from @backtothebasketdotcom Come support his reopening by BUYING these limited stickers from Jeff and order the Spicy Garlic Noodles and Lollipop chicken while you’re there! Great food + great people. #foodisculture #community #portland #culture #smallbusiness #mamachows #food #foodlover #noodles🍜 #entrepreneurs #localeconomy by @culturalblends
Before the night is over, we want to acknowledge our happiness to read @naterobinson was scheduled to have a much needed kidney transplant today at University of Washington Medical Center. If you have been out of the loop, in 2022 he made public that he’d been battling and receiving treatment for renal failure since 2018. Recently he posted, “I know I don’t have long if I can’t get a kidney.” Years before @backtothebasketdotcom opened its doors, Nate helped @culturalblends our OG brand ascend into relevancy in 2014 and helped put Portland and the PNW on the map by rocking our “The Best Coast” shirt. Just like how he sparked an NBA game with electric energy, he was the catalyst to make that single graphic design one of the most iconic designs in Northwest history. After Nate, @damianlillard rocked the 1977 hat the following day after his 0.9 buzzer beater which created its own @trailblazers wave, and then @snoopdogg followed it up in 2015. With saying all that, it was Nate’s infectious energy that got the momentum rolling and without that early push @backtothebasketdotcom might not be what it is today. In everything we do, it’s important to honor the past while creating the future. Thank you, @naterobinson we appreciate you brother, and the speediest of recoveries. We will continue to be a light and positive energy as your are on and off the court 🫡💐🏀 #culturalblends #backtothebasket #community #goodguys #naterobinson #nba by @culturalblends

This was one minute of a 4-5min speech @talilomarfil gave before the music video debut of his new song “My Shoes” with @therealtechn9ne - I wish I recorded it all, because it was worthy of sharing. I left Hollywood Theater incredibly inspired by each short film and music video that was presented - @otfpdx is a special organization that is making tremendous positive impact on the Portland community 🫡 #community #portland #shortfilm #resilience #hiphop #filipino by @culturalblends
