Marie Cole (b.1996) is a visual artist of Guinean-Senegalese heritage based in Oslo, her artistic practice is rooted in intuition, sensing, bodywork, movement, and repetition. Working across diverse media, including installations, textile quilts, silk-printed photographs, sculptures, video, performative rituals, and collectively engaged gatherings; she explore the body and soil as living archives of Afro-diasporic memory. Coles Black Feminist lineage that guides her living practice are currently Audre Lorde, bell hooks, adrienne mare brown, Legacy Russel among many others and to come.

She defines ;
Soil: A layered organism connected by lived experiences, memories, the familiar and the unfamiliar. It’s a material of becoming, where one can root, ground, and preserve. A place to carry what has been inherited, held or hidden. Where entanglements of archival material are found.

Diaspora: Diaspora isn’t defined by how one moves; rather, it is about carrying a culture whilst moving. The diaspora preserves that which is carried whilst adapting to a new land.

Piecing it together 🖌️

Collaging helps me slow down my thoughts, be present and find calm. I could spend hours just looking through magazines, end up reading some before I cut a picture I want then work on the same piece for a week (or I forget about it and come back to glue it after several months). What's your favourite creative way to slow down?
