So this is us! Angélique and Marius. Culvin and Dalseg. We’re both photographers. I do Portraits and Beauty. And Marius is an Outdoors/Adventure photographer. We’ve been together 8 years, met in Dublin where we both lived at the time. Between us we speak 3 languages, live in Oslo, drink a decent amount of tea and spend too much money on camera equipment and chocolate.
I like the beach, M loves the mountains.
We have conflicting views on cameras (Canon and Sony vs. Nikon) We try love each other despite this serious wedge in our relationship 😂 We’re currently trying to find our love song and failing miserably. Marius is also a Disney princess and a Lord of the Rings nerd. I don’t have the attention span for either and am a loyal Ru Paul’s Drag Race fan!
We’re terrible at accents.

Angelique Culvin - Feeling blue⁣
⁣
The Black crown is heavy. The course of its path hardens us with hurt that we don't say out loud. It gets under our skin and makes us wish we were different. It slowly drowns us from the inside, where no one can see. We end up building walls so high that they swallow us whole. Because a prison is still a form of shelter, we tell ourselves, and there we remain. The Black crown is heavy, but we are children of the sun. We refuse to shut ourselves off. We will surround ourselves with love and openness.⁣
⁣
30x40 cm (12“x16”).⁣
Limited edition of 30 prints.⁣
Pigment print on fine art paper.⁣
⁣
About the artist:⁣
@culvin is a photographer and poet born in Tanzania, moulded in Ireland and based in Norway. She likes to show the complexity of what it means to be African, Black, a woman, and an immigrant. “I aim to visualize the Black/African/immigrant experience, not only as a space of struggle but beauty and healing.”⁣
⁣
35% of this sale will be directly donated to @kidsofcolourhq who creates spaces for young people of colour to come together and explore race, identity and culture and support them to challenge the racism they face in the UK.⁣

RC conducted short interviews from artists that interpreted the #voguechallenge trend.

Hi! I’m Angélique Culvin. I’m a photographer and poet based in Oslo, Norway.

RC: What do you think the #voguechallenge did for the BAME community?

Angélique: I think the #VogueChallenge is calling for the fashion industry to look outside that sphere, dare and give more chances to a range of talents and voices. The challenge is also calling for a broader representation and narrative. I hope this mobilises inclusion of a multitude of voices and the full spectrum of creativity from all walks of life and backgrounds - not just in front of and behind the lens, but also in creative and editorial teams.

What this has done for the BAME community is to expose the range of possibilities available. It's platforming how strong our voices, stories, imagination, lenses and faces are.

RC: What difficulties did you go through as a black artist and how did you overcome those moments of prejudice?

A: I think there’s a certain limitation artists experience when we, for example, want to get published or make a name for ourselves in the industry - as nobodies. “Beggars can’t be choosers". As a black artist, my personal experience is that trying to fit in ended up limiting my voice, perspective and toolbox. I wanted to see more of myself, to show and represent more POC but ended up failing to do so. I was ‘ new' in the market (still am), got limited options, had a small network, was afraid to ask for pay - beginner’s grind and insecurities. I didn’t dare take up space.

I overcame that by focusing more on self-portraits and securing a steady job. It meant I could dedicate more time to projects I’m passionate about and also represent what I stand for. Everyone has an agenda. It’s up to you to find what works for you and how to best realise the delivery of that message.

RC: Could you let people know what you did during the lockdown to keep yourself creative?

A: It sounds generic but I read and wrote poems. I am lucky though, as my own ‘model', lockdown didn’t affect my work too badly. If you rely on models or external clients, I'd encourage you to give self-portraits a try.
