Garden at the End of Time

Tin Sheds gallery until 19 July.

The exhibition explores the garden as a politically and culturally charged site.

From the blurb: Within the walls of the gallery, the garden becomes construed as a place where meaning is not only reflected but also constantly cultivated, and negotiated—an ever-evolving ecosystem rather than an ossified microcosm.
.
While the garden is often tied to its Edenic “beginning,” anthropologist Natasha Myers suggests how contemporary gardens increasingly respond to a sense of the end. In our time of climate catastrophe and late stage capitalism, she describes how gardens “throw us into the world, induce anxiety, and get us very interested in the urgency of life and death at the cusp of collapse on a damaged planet.”
.
Propelled by this urgency, the exhibition asks what radical ideas stir and grow in the garden today?
.
Curated by @anna_may_kirk and @tai_mitsuji Artists: Gabriella Hirst, Garry Trinh, Jamie North, Katie Paterson, Katie West, Majid Mirmohamadi, Olindo Polo, Tom Melick, Simryn Gill, Anna Polo, Tom Polo, Sean Allen Fisher and Thea Anamara Perkins

Narelle Jubelin — Contexto. For RDJ, RG & TH, 2024 at The Commercial
.
First exhibited in 2001, the exhibition consistes of eleven petit-points based on photographs taken by her father in 1964 to document the building of the family home on Dharug/Darug land.
.
From the thoughtful exhibition essay by @ameliawallin
"What does it mean twenty years on, to revisit Owner Builder? Amidst the cost of living crisis, what does it mean to unpick the foundational ideas of single-family dwellings, the idea that everyone should have a patch of land when that land was stolen anyway? Our relationship to modernism is complicated and our relationship to home ownership is compromised and it is these unsettling complexities that Jubelin urges us to sit with." @thecommercial #narellejubelin taken in Wangal Country by @curating.architecture

Last days for South Asian Modernisms: Australian Scholarship and Global Perspectives, curated by Dr. Amit Srivastava, Centre of Asian and Middle Eastern Architecture at the University of Adelaide. This travelling exhibition is a reformulation of a portion of the 2022 MoMA exhibition “The Project of Independence: Architectures of Decolonization in South Asia, 1947–1985” interspersed with new archival material relating to research currently underway. The exhibition occupies half the wall space at @art_atrium . The other half hosts the exhibition The Architect and the Artist, showing paintings and prints by a number of local architects with an art practice: Paul Connor, Philip Cox, Lucy Moloney, Peter Poulet and Fang Xu as well as some works by international architects, Michael Graves, Arata Isozaki, Richard Meier, and Herzog & de Meuron in collaboration with Ai Weiwei. It's great to see another gallery space in Sydney showing architecture, but I didn't think the two exhibitions complemented each other and would love to see each as a standalone show. #architectureexhibition #architectureexhibitionsydney #architectswithartpractice #architecturearchives MOMA panels in colour, photography Randhir Singh. A first visit to SHErobots: Tool, Toy, Companion at @tinshedsgallery curated by Dagmar Reinhardt, Lian Loke, Deborah Turnbull Tillman

Lots to take in, the exhibition asks fundamental questions about the nature and processes of contemporary robotics through the lens of female perspectives. Accompanied by a comprehensive catalog.

From website blurb: We are witnessing the rise of the Female Future, where women are leading and radically reshaping practices of design, industrial, construction, manufacturing, social and cultural robotics. Implicit in female-led robotic practices is the overturning of patriarchal values towards a progressive more-than-human paradigm. Feminist values infuse research approaches, ways of working together and the production of robotic processes, prototypes or artefacts that mirror, subvert or transform the status quo.

SHErobots is the first exhibition of its kind in Australia. It charts and builds upon a history of expert research and output of women pioneering work in a cross-disciplinary network situated across the globe.

SHErobots creates a living laboratory, inviting students, researchers, industry, and community to actively and physically explore ideas, prototypes and processes. It seeks to seed new opportunities and collaborations for female voices leading the disruption into traditional robotics towards a network of critical and creative practice.

Loved the set up for the Spring Salon last night, hosted by @johnwardlearchitects at their new Sydney studio.

Always fun and inspiring evenings, an extra delightful pairing of Kawai Yeung and Shelley Indyk, two formidable women who bring their ethics and passions to their respective practices.

Followed by lively discussions with friends old and new, still feeling disproportionately enchanted by face to face encounters. Thank you @_justineclark and @_parlour and @kaunitzyeungarchitecture and @indykia #parlourspringsalon

Inbetween: Cultural connections through design at @nationalmuseumofaustralia

From the website: "an immersive, large-scale filmic experience, reimagined from an exhibition in Australia’s pavilion at the 2021 Venice Biennale of Architecture.
Inbetween presents a collection of architectural projects selected for their powerful representation of Indigenous peoples and cultures. These projects enabled cross-cultural exchanges to occur and highlighted the importance of – and the need to preserve – Indigenous knowledge, agency and voice.
They were undertaken in locations across Australia, Aotearoa (New Zealand), Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Fiji and Vanuatu.
Architecture becomes the enabler, allowing us to connect, to evoke Country, to reveal layers of history and memory and to give cultural expression, predicated on a people-centred approach to a shared humanity. Each of the selected projects has been aligned with one of five key themes: Language, Storytelling, Knowledge, Preservation and Country. Crucially, all the projects have a strong connection and crossover with one or more of these themes. These act as chapters for the film, allowing the viewer to be transported through a series of key elements anchored in place and culture."
