Current glimpse | Maungarongo Te Kawa at Season

𝙃𝙚 𝙆𝙤𝙝𝙖 𝙈ō 𝙏𝙖𝙠𝙪 𝘼𝙧𝙤𝙝𝙖 foregrounds protest as a practice of aroha, joy and collective resistance through vibrant patchwork banners that depict candlelit vigils, the Matariki stars sheltering in phosphorescent Hīnātore, and ancestors travelling by waka.

On Friday, we celebrated the opening of 𝙂𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙥 𝘼𝙙𝙢𝙞𝙩𝙨 𝙈𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚, Artspace Aotearoa’s (@artspace.aotearoa’s) annual new commissions exhibition supported by the Chartwell Trust (@chartwellproject) — featuring artists Lolani Dalosa (@dnp1997), Ken Faber (@_kekeno_), Lily Greig, Ton Ray (@tonraysirius447), and Rangi White.

Snapshots from Tom Tuke’s recent puppetry performance for Karangahape Art Weekend, which recreated the iconic St. Kevin’s Arcade in the doorway of Pitt Street Methodist Church.

Tuke’s 𝚏𝚕𝚘𝚊𝚝𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚜𝚑𝚊𝚍𝚘𝚠 𝚙𝚞𝚙𝚙𝚎𝚝𝚛𝚢 is an original form of puppetry developed by the artist, using a shallow pool, fish-pond pump, torch and a series of hand-cut shadow puppets. The performance plays with light, water and movement to create shifting scenes in real time.

Earlier this year, Current visited artist Marcus Hipa’s (@marcushipa’s) studio as he prepared for his exhibition, 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙇𝙪𝙠𝙪 & 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙇𝙞𝙤𝙣, first shown at Bergman Gallery and currently on view at Māngere Arts Centre.

In this extended video, Hipa speaks about the genesis of the exhibition — the 150 Niuean men who left their homeland in 1915 and went to war in Europe as part of the New Zealand Māori Pioneer Battalion — alongside Cook Islanders, Samoans, Tongans, and Fijians.

The work interprets how these men might have felt. The paintings are bright, sci-fi in register, built with reference to WWI propaganda posters, Pacific sunset drawings, and talanoa heard late at night growing up in Niue.

On Saturday, we celebrated the opening of Jack Valentine’s (@jackvalent1ne’s) exhibition at Plomacy, 𝙁𝙪𝙣 𝘽𝙖𝙙 𝙏𝙞𝙢𝙚.

The paintings draw on the visual cues of science fiction, with empty scenes and absent figures that recall the artificial worlds of 1980s cinema. Technology, anxiety and imagined futures are rendered through saturated colour, humour and spectacle, giving the paintings an uncanny mix of optimism and dread about what lies ahead.
