I mean…how else does one close out summer…ice cream and @jackdaniels_us seems fitting. Thanks @lionsheadtavern. Also, congrats on 24 years as a treasured NYC small business and neighborhood staple. taken in Lion's Head Tavern by @curtisdyoung

I can’t put my finger on it but Gracie Mansion feels different. Thanks Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani for bringing joy and efficiency back to the peoples house. Good rum punch, great eats, a stellar steel band and a DJ was added value. As Clair Huxtable would say…”big fun” but without the wretched. (google that multi-layered euphemism…#iykyk) 😂😂😂

tory Time: This is perhaps a little known fact for some of my new followers but many moons ago as a young 20 something I moved to France for three years (prior to living in Guinea working with Tostan International, a year in the West Bank teaching at Al Na Jah University under the U.S. Department of State Palestinian Faculty Development Program and a summer working in Morocco as a site director for the National Security Language Initiative for Youth a program I later managed stateside). I studied French from a young age and wanted to improve my language skills immersed in the culture - the best way to truly perfect any language - including my Arabic. I stubbled across a teaching job at a Lycée in the Rhône Alps region in a small village called Nantua but the most significant experience was the two summers I spent working at a French sports camp called Sports Elite Jeunes. French children would come for sports training (tennis and soccer) while also taking English immersion courses in the morning. It was there I learned to love soccer (football) and naturally became fanatical over “Les Bleu” (L’Equipe Nationale) and Olympique Lyonnais - OL. I recall realizing my language skills had a long way to go after France lost in the World Cup that year and I lacked the language skills to console 40 crying French children 😂. Saying “ce n’est pas la fin du monde” was not at all helpful…now I fully understand why that wasn’t the best way to calm fans down, particularly children. The French don’t play about football! I’m still a fan of France but it’s so good seeing Team USA make strides in their performance over the years. This is also all the patriotism I have to spare at the moment…but still…Allez Les Bleus! 🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷

Shout out to the team there at SEJ / AmVil with me and explained the game to a young American boy those legendary summers… Thibaut Laffont Helen Le Brun Amelia Kyriakakis and many more! by @curtisdyoung

Today we stood on sacred ground to remember our ancestors who traversed that threshold when brought to this country as enslaved Africans. As we reflect on USA 250 we must center our countries origin story also in the historical trauma it caused for generations of descendants and usher in a greater awakening.

As Frederick Douglas so adequately and eloquently stated, “What to the Slave is the 4th of July?” Don’t be blinded by the Stars and Stripes…also remember the blood, sweat and tears!

New York’s history with slavery is often obscured by the passage of time and the preference for more comfortable narratives. But the truth is powerful and it is necessary. New York was a slaveholding city. The labor of enslaved Africans built its streets, its economy, and its future — a future they were not permitted to share freely.
