Hello! I am happy to share the printing notes from the Field Notes project for my fellow gel printers and folks who are interested in getting started in gel plate printing.

▪️A quick note: This list is *not* the list of materials I use every time to print. I use a variety of paints, paint combinations, plate brands and sizes, and types of brayers. The following notes are specifically for this project and were used to best fit the goals of this particular print.
➖
Gel Plate: Gel Press, 12 x 14 inch plate, seasoned ~1.5 years
➖
Brayer: 4-inch Testrite Hard rubber brayer, uncleaned to enhance character marks in the print
➖
Paint Palette Knife: Artist Loft brand
➖
Bushes: Old-decrepit stain brush, Artist Loft value brand round brush, Princeton Art & Brush Co. detail brushes, misc. Brushes
➖
Paints: Liquitex Basic Acrylic ‘Yellow Oxide’ ~ Liquitex Basic Acrylic ‘Green Gray’ ~ Liquitex Basic Acrylic ‘Unbleached Titanium,’ ~ Amsterdam Standard Series Acrylic ‘Black Oxide’ ~ Golden Fluid Acrylic ‘Carbon Black.’
Paint notes- Black paints mixed in varying ratios to achieve suitable viscosity to best fit the specific plate I was using and the temperature/humidity in my studio at time of printing.
➖
Paper: Source image printed in high contrast B & W in CMYK print settings on 8.5 x 11 inch HP Everyday Copy and Print Paper, 20 lb, 75 gsm.
➖
Printmaking paper for final pull: Strathmore Printmaking paper, medium surface, 18 x 24 inch 120 gsm
➖
Programs used to create source image: Procreate, Photoshop
➖
Printer: Canon Imageclass MF663Cdw

Those are the material details! I know there are lots of questions about gel plate printing and there are so many factors that can impact a successful print. For context I have been experimenting with this method of printing for over three years and am still finding out new ways to print or adjusting some of my existing printing practices.

Are you interested in learning gel plate printing from me? I’ll be sharing more in the coming weeks what my class plans are for this year and next!

Thank you for following and please let me know if you have more questions in the comments 🖤 by @cutandplaced

Some minimal collages that are mostly horses which wasn’t planned but here they are. My brain is tired and these little paper piles was all it could muster this weekend. Happy to find a little flow ripping up lots of LIFE magazines.

More art this week, thank you for following 🖤 by @cutandplaced

New for Fall - the “Hunter’s Moon” edition, captured here by @lucaszfitz.

Inspired in part by Ted Kooser’s lovely poem, “Abandoned House,” artist Laura Weiler (@cutandplaced) created the dream-like artwork spanning across covers of both books using a unique gel plate method of monoprinting, layering collaged images, inks, and paints that are pressed and then transferred to paper.

Our 72nd quarterly edition for the Fall of 2026 is “Hunter’s Moon,” named for the first full moon after the harvest. Known for the bright and warm light it casts on newly gleaned fields, The Hunter’s Moon serves as a mindful call to prepare for the quieter months ahead.

Michigan artist Laura Weiler @cutandplaced created the dream-like artwork for the covers using a unique gel plate method of monoprinting, layering collaged images, inks, and paints that are pressed and then transferred to paper.

Weiler’s artwork is reproduced on sturdy 100#C Mohawk Superfine stock. Three black staples bind 48 pages of Mohawk Superfine “Warm White” 70#T, an excellent premium paper that is ideal for writing and artwork across a variety of media.

Available in 2-Packs and via subscription at fieldnotesbrand.com

Lots of mail art collages going out this week! I’ve been very into ripping up old LIFE magazine lately and it was fun to make some postcard collages for World Postcard Day this past week. Some artist trading cards headed out too!

I’m working at getting better at composition in collages like these, how am I distributing color and texture? How am I choosing what to cover what? I’m also trying to get better at design and these little paper piles are a nice low-pressure way to practice.

As always, always, thank you for following 🖤

Three takes in one design, which do like best? The last one is pretty dirty but I still like it!

I had a frustrating day in the studio with printmaking but I’m excited to try again tomorrow. I am also feeling a little uninspired and I know it’s because I’ve been too serious with how I’m approaching my work and not being playful enough.

Back at it tomorrow and I hope to have new work to share this week. Thank you for following! by @cutandplaced

A little stack of small collages I pulled together at a recent Open Studio at Guild Kalamazoo and also a fun Library hang at our branches Maker Space.

I don’t think I can express how much I like making collages and art in community with others. I’m so thrilled I landed in a place in MI where that is fostered and continue to be excited about all the gatherings still happening back in the PNW where I co-founded Pacific Northwest Collage Collective.

I am hosting a public event this week at my library too! We are making collage bookmarks for cozy reading season.

Excited to swap these cards via snail mail too-

Some juicy green prints for this sunny September day. The top one is new and the others are older and just because they felt fresh and leafy.

More new work this week! My experiments today in the studio were really messy and honestly clumsy too. I’ll probably still share it anyways because it’s nice to see not only the highlights I assume? But also the ‘oops’ and the ‘oh sh*it”s…

I spent some time in my studio this weekend breaking out my @gelelf plate and testing @blickartmaterials paint and @amsterdamacrylics_de with it. I also had a really fun time playing with color combinations.

I’d say I’m still figuring out a bunch but happy to be challenging myself. I’m so so on this design but it was a solid one to use during color exploration.

Thank you for following and you can catch a “making of” reel of the blue one over in my reels section. 🖤 by @cutandplaced

Some new art from last week, I like ‘em and am so excited to keep printing and collaging this fall. Gel plates are so surprising, I’m always learning. You can see a zippy making of over in my reels section of that floating rock print on top~

Hope you are all doing alright out there and thank you as always for following 🖤 by @cutandplaced

A mix of houses~analog collage, mono print, digital collage, scanned bits and things.

Houses are always on my mind. We got a fixer upper about two years ago and I’m always thinking of the next project. Along with that I love the look of the structure of a home, its symbolism and how everyone interprets it.

Do you like one more than the other?

I am very stoked on this top one. More black backgrounds and experimenting with color combinations coming soon for sure.

I’ve included all of my findings in this post from trying to get this red to stick and also attempting with moderate success to get black cardstock to work with a gel medium. I’m jazzed to keep trying and see what I can turn up!
Some “fails” are in there too, but they are also pretty.
