Week 2 of The Sewing Labs Stitch Off is complete! Here is my entry. I love my pillow! I’ve wanted to make a bolster for awhile now and this was a great reason to make one.
Everything was from my stash except for the amazing trim. I unintentionally matched the blanket on the couch. I am especially proud of the pillow insert I made. Scroll through to see my burrito of left over foam, bating and sewing scraps I managed to create. I’ve been saving all that stuff to make stuffing and felt crazy for keeping it all. But it worked out so well. Barley made a dent, so I guess I need to make some more inserts.
The rest of the pillow was also a dream to make. The tassel trim is so fun! Can’t wait to display the pillow on the couch! Gotta make sure to keep it away from the kitties. #stitchoff @thesewinglabs by @cvaughn03

Hi friends!
I am competing in @thesewinglabs Greater KC Stitch off. It’s a fundraiser! Week one is Precision.
Strap in because I’ve got a crazy story.
As if a sewing challenge wasn’t enough, I was heading out of town for Seattle for the week.
On Monday I picked up the pattern and dug through my fabric to see if I was inspired by anything in my stash.
I found this beautiful teal fabric but did not have quite enough to make the whole jacket.
My solution to make it work was to add strips to the hem and sleeves. Teal and red is my favorite color combo.
That night I started cutting and sewing and packing for the trip to Seattle.
Tuesday, I started my journey with a bag full of sewing supplies and spent the day running around with the husband.
Wednesday I searched for a place to sew. It was wayyyyyyu harder than I thought it would be and I started getting STRESSED!
I think I might become an urban legend among the sewing community in Seattle. I was calling all the sewing machine stores and fabric stores I could find to try to get some sewing time in. It took almost all day but the @seattlemakershq came in at the last minute and I will be forever grateful!
I sewed as fast as I could and wished I could have taken more care with the finishing and precision, but I was on a major time crunch.
At the maker space I made some friends and had a blast sewing with the Seattle sewing community.
I did not have unlimited access to the sewing machine so I did what I absolutely had to by machine. I did not follow the instructions as close as I should have. I did LOTS of hand sewing the facings closed and the frog closures and trim.
My piece has a slight Christmas vibe but I guess that can happen when using teal and red.
But I am so proud of this, and the craziness with how it all came together.

Let’s meet visionary creatives behind the performance art that will ascend in motion during “I’m Precious — A Grand Finale” event this Saturday. This is something you’ve never seen before and we are so thrilled to showcase these artists, designers and performers.

Meet Chandler Vaughn, @cvaughn03, is a tailor and custom clothing and costume designer. She began her sewing journey in high school and hasn’t stopped sewing since. She fell into the world of alterations and is very passionate about helping people with her sewing skills. Not all bodies are created equal and clothing shouldn’t be either. She finds there is so much to learn from taking things apart and putting them back together.

Alterations can be very challenging and require major problem solving skills that really come in handy when making garments from scratch. Her favorite garments to make are corsets and lingerie. The most recent lingerie collection she designed was inspired by vintage hankies!

Precious Frivolities started as a dream and creative vision from @aprilmaddenstudio — a place where artists, designers and creatives could sell their work in a community focused, curated shop — championing the unique, the handmade, and the one-of-a-kind. KC-based designer April Madden Aprilmaddenstudio brought together an Avengers-level squad of local pros to produce the coat worn by actress Hunter King, and now the coat is available to the wider public for purchase. Originally $1,587 /// ON SALE FOR $595.

Here’s how Madden explained the initial process:
    •    The film’s costume designer, Keith Nielsen, @keith_costumes, dreamed up the initial design.
    •    Madden stitched a prototype.
    •    Designer Sarah Nelsen, @sarahnelsen, digitized and graded the pattern in sizes XS to 2XL.
    •    Tailor Maret Miller, @kcsewop, cut the pieces and stitched the leather sleeves.
    •    Madden assembled the wool pieces.
    •    Tailor Chandler Vaughn, @cvaughn03, stitched the pieces together and added the lining.
    •    Tailor Lucia’s Sarto, @lucias_sarto, hand-stitched the keyhole buttonholes.

Look #3 from the Precious Frivolities Artist Showcase!
I love this corset garter belt and am so proud to have drafted it all on my own! The stripes are perfection and actually came from a jumpsuit I found at a thrift store. Can you get any cuter than a ruffle panty?!
The hankie for this was big as far as hankies go and I had enough to make two bra tops out of it. Yay! The green fern in hankie pairs SO well with the amazing fern resin circle belt from @florabeekc because a striped corset wasn’t enough! I also snuck in some freshwater pearls for a nice little detail.
Pics 1,2 and 3 from the fantastic @tomfunkphotos @preciousfrivolities and the amazing @aprilmaddenstudio put on the best fashion show. I am still cruising on the high from the infectious energy and fun from that night!
@tinypicklez embodied the flirty and classy vibes of this look. She is almost the exact measurements as my mannequin and the mock up fit SO WELL I didn’t need to make any adjustments. During our fitting we came up with the idea to add little sparkle dangles on the hips of the corset. The tiny detail bits are the best bits! by @cvaughn03

Look #2 from the Precious Frivolities Artist Showcase!
This look was a feat of sewing ingenuity I did not know I was capable of! I was determined to get the hankie in there in an interesting and unexpected way. There were lots of trial and error and fitting complications. But the end result worth all the stress and worry!
@florabeekc made the gorgeous pink flower earrings and other floral resin charms sprinkled throughout the piece. Another big shoutout and thank you to @sydneynsnelson for being the amazing model that you are. You were so game and down to wear the skimpy stuff. Truly this piece wouldn’t be what it is without you!

Look #1 from the Precious Frivolities Artist Showcase!
This look was so much fun to create. All the looks were inspired by hankies! This one was a gorgeous green and red rose handkerchief. I sat in front of my mannequin moving the hankie around until this design started to form. And the best part? They accentuate Cara’s tattoos so beautifully! Elizabeth of @florabeekc made the necklace, earrings and adorable charms used throughout. She was so fun to collaborate with!
Cannot thank @c.ar.a enough for modeling. Your enthusiasm and joy were infectious. You brought this piece to life!
