I met Sean years ago through The Independence Fund and @sarahaverardo. Sean was always the glue holding the girls together - showing up for Father-Daughter Dances, doing all the boy jobs, and just generally being the guy you knew would show up when you needed him.

When he wasn’t putting out fires at The Independence Fund, he was jumping on planes with a moment’s notice to go help save someone else. Afghanistan, Ukraine, and anywhere else he was asked.

When Hurricane Helene hit, I saw pretty quickly the massive loss of communication and the incredible need for someone like Sean; someone who could figure things out when things were chaotic and when you needed those ninja-like skills. I called him that Sunday afternoon and, within 30 minutes, he was headed west to help with the rescue efforts.

Sean was there for weeks. He slept in his car, in a tent, wherever he could, and spent his days doing whatever needed to be done to save as many people as he could. Infants, the elderly, the families of WNC in their darkest hour.

And he led in those early days in a way that was so completely Sean - quietly, humbly and without ever looking for credit. He never cared about his own glory. He just saw what needed to be done and did it.

He lived out Isaiah 6:8 in a way that so many of us strive to and so often miss: “Here I am, Lord. Send me.”

That was Sean.

Sean changed my life exactly one year ago. He asked me to join his team as a political appointee at the VA. I was honored and incredibly humbled that Sean thought enough of me to ask me to come work alongside him.

If Sean Lee saw something in you that was worthy of his mentorship, that was a win.

I’m so grateful I got to work with him through so many different chapters, but I’m even more grateful that I got to call him my friend.

I’m going to miss him more than I can say.

I’ll forever be thinking about exit strategies, OpSec, SitReps, and cursing military time; and laughing about all of it while remembering my friend, a true American Hero.

Love you, Sean. ❤️🇺🇸 by @cwinchester2
