We met Sean in 2023 through The Independence Fund and our good friend @sarahaverardo - From the beginning, one thing about Sean was obvious: if something needed to get done, he got it done. No complaining. No hesitation. No looking for credit. He was also stubborn as hell. But it wasn’t until Hurricane Helene that Sean and I really reconnected. In the middle of some of the worst devastation Western North Carolina has ever seen, we spent a lot of days and a lot of nights together walking through debris, destroyed homes, knee-deep mud, and communities that had lost nearly everything. I would make trips back and forth home. Sean stayed. If someone needed a Starlink, Sean found them one. If they needed fuel, food, supplies, or help getting somewhere, Sean brought it. If someone needed somewhere to sleep, Sean would give up his own tent. That was just who he was. He helped rebuild homes, stores, lives of those who lost everything in the storm. There were a lot of difficult days down there. But Sean never stopped. He just kept helping. Early last year, Sean was selected to lead VSO affairs for the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in DC. It made perfect sense. Sean knew seemingly everyone in the veteran community, and more importantly, he understood veterans because he was one of them. A 20-year infantryman with numerous combat deployments.. Earlier this year, Sarah texted me: “I need your no-bullshit breakdown of this.” Attached were reports from the VA about Sean. What had initially seemed like ordinary GERD, a hiatal hernia, and difficulty swallowing turned out to be Stage IV esophageal cancer and that took Sean from us yesterday. Sean will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date, where he belongs among so many others who gave a lifetime of service to this country. And I would give just about anything to be walking through the mud with you again, probably arguing about something because neither one of us knew how to back down. In honor of Sean, go do something good for someone else. Don’t post about it. Don’t ask for credit. Just help somebody who needs it. That’s what Sean would have done.

Sean Michael Lee died on September 13, 2026, after a life defined by service, loyalty, courage, and a reflexive willingness to go wherever he was needed most. Sean spent more than 20 years serving his country in the United States Army, including multiple combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan with the storied 82nd Airborne Division. He was, to his core, a paratrooper. His service did not end when his military career did. For more than a decade, Sean continued serving veterans and his country through The Independence Fund and, most recently, as a political appointee at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs under Secretary Doug Collins. But no job title adequately describes what Sean did with his life. When Afghanistan fell in 2021, Sean helped coordinate the evacuation of thousands of Afghan Allies. When Russia invaded Ukraine, Sean went toward the war, helping establish field hospitals and evacuate gravely wounded Fox News correspondent Benjamin Hall. When Hurricane Helene devastated western North Carolina, Sean slept in his car and worked in the disaster zone delivering aid. Sean is survived by his brother, James Lee; sister-in-law Adriana; nephew Jamie; the sisters the Army gave him, Sarah Verardo and Danica Thomas; and the nieces and nephews who knew him as family: Grace, Mary Scott and Elizabeth Verardo; Mila and Lilijana Thomas; and Peggy and Teddy Thomason. The men who first made them family are waiting for him now: Sarah’s husband, Michael Verardo, Danica’s husband, Allen Thomas, and Sean’s military brothers who went before him. His life is measured in people who made it home because he went toward danger, in communities helped when they believed they had been forgotten, and in children who knew him as Uncle Sean: the constant, fiercely protective man who showed up. When his country called, he went. When strangers needed rescue, he went. When disaster struck, he went. Sean Lee lived the ethos: Send me. His legacy knows no bounds. His absence will be immeasurable. I am so grateful he lived with us and we were all in until the bitter end. Thank you Uncle Sean. For all of it. 💔Funeral: Tuesday Sep 22 Weddington Methodist Church 2 PM.

Left the Capital for the North Carolina pines. From sunrise casts to sunset cruises, this weekend was exactly what I needed with a great group of friends. Pontoon cruising, jet ski action, and zero fish were biting; but it was good times back in the South.

Cynicism will often try to introduce itself as wisdom. It sounds measured. It feels discerning. It even looks mature. But if you trace it back, it’s often just disappointment that’s been rehearsed long enough to feel true. It’s sometimes difficult to identify cynicism because it masquerades as intellect married to mature faith. Being cynical is what happens when pain goes unhealed and starts narrating your perspective. When you’ve seen enough hurt that you expect it before it even happens. When you call it “being realistic,” but it’s really just protecting yourself from hoping again. Wisdom is rooted in truth. Cynicism is rooted in wounds. One is led by faith. The other is led by fear dressed up as experience. Don’t let disappointment disciple your thinking. Let God heal what hurt you so you don’t start calling it discernment. Always waiting for the other shoe to drop is no way to live. ❤️

Rolling into Spring at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. 🇺🇸🌷Tradition, sunshine, and a few lucky eggs. The President hosted both Agricultural Day and the Easter Egg Roll at the White House the past week. From the farm to the Front Lawn, the President honored the people who fuel and feed the world. I was also lucky to experience the Easter Egg Roll with my favorite people and my guy. Grateful for these moments at the People’s House! 🌷💛 🇺🇸 #WhiteHouse #EasterEggRoll #AgDay2026 #NationalAgDay #DCLife

Don’t you dare believe the lie that you’re hopeless… even when everything in front of you looks like death. Silence is not absence. Silence is strategy. Just because you can’t see movement doesn’t mean God isn’t executing a plan. Holy Saturday proves it. What looked like the end was actually the setup. While the world sat in silence, He was stepping into darkness, kicking in the doors of hell, and taking back the keys of death and the grave. The enemy thought it was over. But defeat was already sealed. The grave wasn’t permanent. It was temporary. And what looks dead in your life? It’s not finished. This is your invitation to trust when nothing makes sense, to believe when you see no evidence, and to stand when everything feels buried. Because Sunday is coming.

It’s overwhelming to sit in this… Jesus knew. He knew Judas was already in motion. He knew Peter would deny Him. He knew Thomas would doubt. He knew pride was still alive in the room, men still reaching for position. And He still chose them. Not blindly. Not hopefully. Fully aware. And what does He do with that kind of betrayal? He gets low. He removes His garment, lays down His position, wraps Himself in a towel, and takes the posture of the lowest servant in the room. The One with all authority… chooses surrender. The One who deserved to be served… kneels. And He washes their feet. The same feet that would run. The same mouths that would deny. The same hearts that would waver. He serves them anyway. Not because they earned it… but because that’s who He is. While carrying the weight of the cross, He wasn’t consumed with His own pain. He turned it into a moment to reveal love. Even when they couldn’t stay awake for Him… He never stopped loving them. This is the depth of Jesus. He doesn’t just love you at your best. He loves you knowing your worst.
