A successful #volunteering event clearing huge swaths of #pennywort from the river in Wandle Park. Heartfelt thanks to this fantastic team for their hard work. Their efforts play an important role in helping to protect the river’s ecosystem. We now have open water allowing light through and fish populations to thrive. We’ll need to keep up the good work as this invasive plant can spread quickly when conditions are right such as the hot dry summer we have had. Watch this space for the next opportunity to get involved. Another productive couple of hours cleaning in the #wandle today. Great teamwork all round! There is always so much of all sorts of rubbish to haul out. Things that don’t belong in the river…lots of rag, bottles and bags, steel pipes and plastic pipes, tyres and grills. Amazing turnout for yet another river clean‑up. Big love to all the eco‑warriors who showed up (and those not in the photo) — and a special shout‑out to @idverde for the support and rubbish removal, Derek at the National Trust for the loan of those big blue barrels and Andrew Cole for the leadership.
This haul included the classics (shopping trolley, bollards) plus some surprises: a child’s scooter, a swing, a tent, bottles, cans, rag, number plates, nappies and even a few coins.

Get Your Waders on for a River Clean-up

🌿Making a difference! This Saturday the 20th at 1pm, dive into the ultimate outdoor workout with us while making a splash for nature, wildlife and #CleanRivers

A trio of @GoodGym Merton volunteers stopped by at Wandle Park this morning to support the Friends of Colliers Wood Parks and Green Spaces. It was a session of bloom and groom as we tackled jobs to keep the park looking its best:

✂️ Dead-heading daffodils and hyacinths
🌿 Clearing stubborn sticky weed
🗑️ Litter picking

Great weather, even better company, and a very satisfying morning of tidying! There’s nothing like a bit of fresh air and a dead heading session 🧤☀️

Another day another cleanup in the #RiverWandle. Massive thanks to our dedicated #volunteers and all the passerby who stopped to say hello and show their appreciation for our efforts. Thanks also to @southeastriverstrust for the loan of the big blue half barrels and @idverdeuk for picking up and taking away the rubbish. @sainsburys unfortunately refused permission to use their car park for the convenience of the clear up team. @tootingnewsie taken in Colliers Wood by @cwparksgreenspaces

Mini meadow magic – a High Street glow-up of spring flowers amongst the long grass (a bit of a visual pick-me-up at the moment when a lot of what’s happening elsewhere in the world is pretty bleak).

Another busy Sunday last weekend for our river group, who got suited and booted for a wading and raking session – to clear invasive floating pennywort weed from the River Wandle in Wandle Park.
A huge thanks to all river team volunteers! 💙

ℹ️ Floating pennywort (Hydrocotyle ranunculoides) forms dense mats of leaves and thick stems (like udon noodles), which float across the water surface depleting oxygen levels and light for photosynthesis (bad for fish and invertebrates), and it’s outcompeting our native water plants. Thanks to all those who helped litter picking in the Myrna Close Nature Reserve on Saturday (there were more of us than in the photo).
We collected about 27 bags! Lots of all sorts of rubbish; the Nature Reserve looks brilliant. Long may it last 🤔

The mini meadow is just coming into flower, and three cherry blossoms in flower at the end. A blustery day in Colliers Wood Rec but great to stare up at a blue sky through fat white blossoms.

This is the shadow cast by Britannia Point tower block across Wandle Park here in Colliers Wood.
Now, Criterion Capital is proposing three more towers on the site – and if approved, these would cast a significantly larger shadow over Wandle Park, with the loss of light affecting the park’s environment and the wildlife habitat that makes it special.

If you care about this park and this community, your objection counts. You don’t need to be an expert — just write in your own words what this green space means to you.
