October 12th recognizes Indigenous People’s Day, a day to honor the history, cultures, resiliences, and enduring contributions of Indigenous communities.

Here in Long Beach and across coastal Southern California, the Tongva people have thrived for over 10,000 years, shaping our region’s history. May we continue to listen, learn, and support efforts that respect Indigenous voices, traditions, and sovereignty. by @cwsuelysaro

October 1st marks the beginning of Domestic Violence Awareness Month to mourn victims, celebrate survivors, and connect advocates working to end partnered abuse. To those impacted by domestic violence: you are not alone and we support you!

Domestic Violence Awareness is not only a time to reflect on the incredible resilience and strength of survivors, but also to start the conversations on prevention.

I invite you to attend the Women’s Shelter of Long Beach Domestic Violence Awareness Vigil, tomorrow, October 2nd at 6:00pm to honor those affected by intimate partner violence, remember victims, and stand in solidarity. Purple attire is traditionally encouraged. by @cwsuelysaro

Happy Filipino American History Month! This month was proposed in 1991 by the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) and first celebrated in 1992. In October, we honor the historical experiences and societal impacts and contributions that Filipinos have had in our communities, cities, and the US.

Let us celebrate Filipino American History through uplifting their voices and the stories of the generations who paved the way for today’s leaders, workers, professionals, artists, and families. Mabuhay! by @cwsuelysaro

Last week was educational and informative learning from local elected officials across California at the League of California Cities Annual Conference. It was wonderful connecting with colleagues, sharing ideas on how to solve ongoing challenges, and making positive impacts in our cities.

I was honored to be nominated and sworn in as a board of director at the League of California Cities Asian Pacific Islander (API) Caucus @apicaucus.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve and represent to address ongoing issues and finding solutions to address them together. taken in Anaheim Convention Center by @cwsuelysaro

It was a wonderful afternoon to celebrate the Presidential Appointment of Dr. Loren J. Blanchard @csulbpres at California State University, Long Beach @csulongbeach. As an alumni of CSULB (Masters of Public Administration, 2018), I am so excited for Dr. Blanchard’s leadership!

The Xavier University of Louisiana Office of Alumni Relations and the Southern California Alumni Chapter was the host. The planning committee did a fabulous job at organizing the celebration that included a second line dancing.

Dr. Blanchard holds a bachelor’s degree in speech pathology education from Xavier University of Louisiana, a master’s degree in education from McNeese State University in his hometown of Lake Charles, Louisiana, and a Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University of Georgia. To learn more about him go to: https://www.csulb.edu/office-of-the-president/page/loren-j-blanchard by @cwsuelysaro

Let’s Keep Long Beach Covered!

On Tuesday, September 22, I will be presenting Item 24 at the Long Beach City Council meeting alongside my co sponsors, Councilwoman Mary Zendejas and Councilwoman Dr. Joni Ricks Oddie.

As a former health policy advocate and labor organizer for healthcare workers, I have spent much of my career working to expand access to healthcare and address the barriers that keep people from getting the care they need. That experience shaped my belief that healthcare is a fundamental part of a healthy and thriving community. I believe everyone should be able to access quality healthcare regardless of their income or circumstances, which is why I have long supported the goal of universal healthcare and Medicare for All. As Councilwoman, I continue to bring that same commitment to the work I do for Long Beach residents.

Which is why Item 24 will focus on understanding the local impacts of H.R. 1, also known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, with particular attention to changes affecting Medi Cal and CalFresh.

California has already begun implementing significant changes with most coming in 2027 to Medi Cal, including new eligibility and reporting requirements, work and community engagement requirements for certain adults, changes to immigration related eligibility, and a transition to Fee for Service Medi Cal for certain members beginning January 1, 2027. H.R. 1 is also changing CalFresh, including new work and community engagement requirements for some recipients and changes to eligibility for certain lawfully present immigrants. We need to know more on how these changes will affect our community!

This item is an opportunity to better understand what these federal changes could mean here for our residents, families, healthcare providers, hospitals, clinics, food assistance providers, and community organizations. I invite residents and community partners to attend the meeting to share their experiences and concerns during public comment.
